*Sophs pov*
"Merle." Said Rick his voice laced with anger.
Daryl gave me a look and I knew we were both thinking the same thing.
"He's gonna be taking some revenge back to camp." Daryl said voicing our thoughts. I looked down at the ground praying that our brother wouldn't hurt anyone. Merle was erratic and a asshole to practically everyone , I knew that, but it didn't stop me from hoping for the best in him.I looked over at Rick and could see he was sick with worry. His family was at the camp. Carl.
Even if I was still pissed at him for leaving my brother on a roof, I couldn't help but feel bad for him.He had come back out here with us to make up for what he did, so maybe he was worth forgiving.
Before anyone could say anything though Rick took off running in the direction of the camp. There was no way he was going to get there before Merle, but he was sure as hell going to try.
Glenn and T-dog both went after him a few moments later, leaving me and Daryl stood where the van used to be. We hesitated at first but followed behind them at a steady pace, both of us thinking the same thing.
Our brother, our responsibility.
********************
We reached the steep hill that led up to the camp and we all slowed down. All of us stood hunched over panting, attempting to catch our breath. I had spent the whole time hoping and praying that Merle hadn't done anything. We had spent nearly a month with these people and even though I didn't usually let it show, I did care for them, and didn't want them to get hurt.
Our break was cut short though, by a blood curdling scream coming from the camp.
I don't even remember telling my legs to move, but somehow they did, and I was running right beside Rick as fast as I could towards it.
****************
All five of us ran as fast as our legs could carry us following the screams, and soon we reached the opening from the trees to the camp.
My eyes grew wide with fear at the scene in front of me. There were walkers everywhere chasing after people and chowing down on the ones on the ground.
My breath faltered and I struggled to keep my footing but I forced myself to focus and keep a level head. I couldn't be scared anymore. Not in this world.
Rick, T-dog and Glenn immediately rushed forward to protect the ones left alive in camp. I went to follow after them but a hand gripped my shoulder.
I turned to see Daryl staring at me with a look of warning, but before he could say anything I spoke up.
"We have to help them!"
I could see he was hesitant but after he heard one of the children screaming he immediately jumped into action.
"Stay close to me." He said sternly and passed me a gun. I nodded and followed behind him while he fired at the dead.
I could see at least three people were down and by the amount of walkers coming out the woods, there would probably be more soon. Me and Daryl stayed back to back firing at as many as we could, but I was running out of bullets. Daryl was focused on the group of walkers that were coming out from the woods so he didn't see what I did.
Lori was stood in the middle of camp, without a weapon, with her arms wrapped around Carl trying to shield him from the horrific sights, while a dead one was walking up behind her.
I aimed my gun and fired, but instead of a loud bang I heard a click, followed by Lori screaming.
I closed my eyes to save myself from seeing them be eaten, until I remembered something. My knives. Daryl had given me them earlier.
So as quickly as I could I grabbed one and threw it as hard as I could. It landed straight in the back of its head just before it reached Lori and little Carl.
I let out the breath I didn't even know I was holding and watched as the gunfire died down and the final few walkers were killed. There were bodies everywhere, ones of walkers and ones of or people.
"Lori! Carl!"
I heard Rick shout as he ran up to embrace his family. I walked up to them as well but only to retrieve my knife.
There were so engrossed in their hug that they almost didn't even notice me pulling my knife out the back of the walkers skull.
"Wait did you do that?" Lori asked me shocked as I put my knife back in its sheath. I gave a small nod while discreetly looking behind her to make sure little Carl was okay. "Thank you Sophie." Rick said looking a little lost for words. I couldn't tell whether they were shocked that I was able to kill the walker or that I was willing to after Merle being left behind.
I nodded and walked off quickly trying to avoid from looking at the bodies littering the ground. I could see the solemn faces of the group members left alive and all I could hope for was that Merle was not responsible for this.
I hoped that the walkers just naturally made their way to the camp and that Merle hadn't led them here for revenge.
I hope.
