The whole car ride back, Elenora, out loud, went though the possibilities of Peter Pan and Mystery Man being one in the same.
Kate just listened and nodded at the right times, occasionally throwing in her two cents.
The tune to Kate's favorite show started playing through the speakers. It either meant her mom was calling, or her uncle.
She unplugs the phone and answers with a, "Hey Uncle D! How's it going?"
Elenora listened to the one sided conversation, trying to figure out what they were talking about. From what she could understand, it was a pleasant conversation but Kate seemed to tense up at one point.
"Yeah, no, that's totally cool." A pause. There was no noise from the other end either. "It's been a while since I've seen Aunt Sarah anyways."
So that's what this is about.
Kate's aunt Sarah had some strong opinions about those in the LGBT community. When Kate was younger, she adored her aunt and loved spending time with her but when she got older and came out, her aunt suddenly stopped talking to her.
Her uncle Dante explained to her way, saying that his sister was just stuck in her old fashioned ways and that hopefully, someday, she would come around.
Kate doubted that day would ever come.
"Okay, so what should I bring?" She asks. She nods though her uncle couldn't see it. "Awesome. Oh hey, I'm in the car with Elenora right now, wanna say hi?"
She switches her phone onto speaker and holds it in between them.
"Hi Dante!" Elenora says, making sure to keep her eyes on the road. She'd always had a hard time concentrating but with Kate in the car to make sure she didn't start getting too interested in the phone.
"Hey, Elon!" That was his nickname for her ever since she could remember. "How's my favorite not drop out doing?"
Kate gasps in offensive before laughing lightly. Dante loved to joke that Kate had dropped out of college since she wasn't doing it the "traditional" way.
"My courses are actually administered from a college, thank you very much." Kate adds, defensively.
"Oh yeah? What college?" He asks.
Kate flushes. "A public one..."
Dante had gotten his PhD in biology and had gone to Stanford and Princeton. He was hoping that Kate would follow in his footsteps since during her high school years, she showed great promise in all forms of sciences but her heart was in photography.
"Hey, I just invited Kate to a get together I was having at my place." Dante explains.
"It's not a get together, it's for his 47th birthday but he feels too old if he says that." Kate laughs.
She and Dante were able to throw jabs at each other without getting hurt. They had some of the toughest skin and could go back and forth all day.
"And," he says, proceeding as if Kate hadn't said anything. "I wanted to extend the invitation to you as well! I mean, you're basically part of the family so it would weird to not have you."
"Thank you so much!" Elenora gushes. She looks down at the phone, earning a snap from Kate, pointing back to the road. Elenora rolls her eyes and looks back at the road. "I would love to come!"
"Great! It'll be this upcoming Sunday from 4:30-11:00 but I understand if you have a class you have to get to early in the morning." Another jest at Kate.
