Amy rushed to her car, not daring to look back.
She fumbled frantically in her pocket for her car keys before groaning with panic as she realized she had left them in the guest room.
Without thinking, she raced off into the trees; the demon's bellowing still ringing in her ears.
After a minute or two, Amy stopped in a clear and remote part of the woods to catch her breath which came out in opaque clouds as she leaned against a tree.
A sudden shiver ran through her, making her immediately regret not having a coat with her.
It would have been so easy to go back to the manor and bask in its warmth.
But he would still be there...
Pushing herself off the tree, Amy began to walk towards the direction she knew led to the road back to her hometown, barely able to see 2 feet in front of her with the meager help of the moonlight.
The ominous shadows of the trees loomed over her while thorns of bushes lightly snagged at her jeans.
She pulled out her phone and tapped the flashlight app, flooding the woods with light.
Think of home, Amy. She thought to herself. Think of being at home wrapped up in your fluffy blanket, watching random crap on Netflix with Katheryn.
A faint growl made her stop in her tracks.
With her breath catching in her throat, she slowly turned around on the spot.
Her eyes widened when they met with a pack of 3 wolves, all bearing their teeth at her and snarling viciously.
Hands trembling, she dropped her phone while backing away as calmly as she could, trying to keep an eye on all of them as they started to advance on her.
Feeling her foot knock against a large broken branch on the ground, Amy swiped it up and clutched tight, ready to swing at any of the beasts who got too close.
Without warning, the wolf in the front who seemed to be the alpha, lept at her; fangs bared and claws outstretched.
Amy swung the branch at it with barely enough time, hitting it square in the snout and catching it off guard.
But this only made it angrier. It quickly composed itself and continued to advance upon Amy who was desperately swinging at it while trying to keep an eye on the other two.
A shriek escaped her as the predator sunk its teeth into the wood and snatched it out of her hands, leaving her defenseless as she was forced to back away from her only source of light until she felt her back hit a tree.
The alpha snarled at her, spraying spit between its teeth. Amy shut her eyes as it lept at her again, aiming towards her neck.
I'm going to die...
But the pain of the wolf's fangs sinking into her flesh never came. Instead, she felt the presence of another being and the sound of the beast whimpering.
Amy looked up just in time to see Dark lifting up her attacker above his head with amazing strength before hauling it against a tree, knocking it out.
The largest out of the two remaining members of the pack rushed towards him, teeth bared, but Dark flung his fist at it, straight in the nose, causing it to whimper as it retreated.
Dark turned to face her, his chest heaving and his eyes wide and ferocious.
They stared at each other for a long moment before a blur of gray caught Amy's attention.
"Dark, look out!"
But before Dark had the chance to react, the third wolf pounced on him, its teeth ripping through the sleeve of his suit jacket and biting into the skin of his forearm, bringing him to his knees.
"Argh!" He cried before sending his fist straight into its nose with all the strength he had in his free arm.
The third wolf, which seemed to be the youngest out of the three, released its fangs with a pitiful whine and ran off into the darkness of the woods.
Gasping in relief, Amy pushed herself off the tree once more and snatched up her phone. Dark looked up at her for a second, almost despairingly as he cradled his bleeding arm before letting his head fall.
Turning the light towards the direction of the road, Amy only made it a couple of steps before stopping abruptly as she heard his sharp and pained breaths.
Stuffing her phone back into her pocket, she turned back around and approached him, causing Dark to glance up at her.
"I need you to stand."
He stared at her, almost bewildered as she held out her hand to him.
Taking it, Amy helped him to his feet and wrapped his arm around her shoulders as he stumbled slightly before they both made their way back to the manor.

A thick tension hung in the air of the sitting room.
Dark, sitting in a winged armchair, scowled at the roaring fire; his suit jacket was discarded while the torn sleeve of his shirt was rolled up, exposing the red and inflamed bite wounds from the wolf.
Amy stood by his side, ringing out a rag that was soaked with warm water and disinfectant, pretending not to notice the staff lingering by the door.
Jack and P.J's anxiety showed clearly on their faces as they watched wide-eyed, unlike Miriam who was watching Dark carefully with narrowed eyes.
"Give me your arm," Amy said tonelessly to him, holding the rag flat in her palm.
Moving his eyes from the fire to her, he did as she said with a deep frown. Holding it in her free hand, Amy gently pressed the cloth against the inflamed wounds.
"Argh!" Dark roared, snatching his arm away.
Jack and P.J. bounded out the door, hiding from their employer's outburst while Miriam remained where she stood, looking as though she was enjoying the show as Dark snarled at their guest.
"That hurts!"
"If you'd hold still it wouldn't hurt as much!" Amy snapped, glaring back at him.
"If you hadn't run away, this would never have happened!" He barked, leaping from his chair and pointing to his wounded limb.
"If you hadn't frightened me I wouldn't have run away!"
He blinked at her, looking aghast. "You shouldn't have been in the west parlor!"
"You should learn to control your temper!" She retorted.
Dark opened his mouth to counter back, but only to find he had none.
Jack and P.J. peered around the door frame as a wide grin grew on Miriam's face.
"Hold still. This might sting a little." Amy said tenderly as she took back his arm and pressed the cloth against it. "By the way, thank you for saving me."
The anger in his eyes had vanished as he looked back at her, blinking with surprise.
"You're welcome."
