thirteen

gilbert paced outside the door of cabin number 16 and brushed his hand through his hair. he groaned slightly before knocking for what seemed like the hundredth time. "roy! come on- i know you're in there!" gilbert rose his voice and was about to knock again when the door opened to show a very unbothered looking roy gardner. "thought i recognized you're aggressive knocking, what's up gillyboy?" gilbert rolled his eyes at the nickname and shoved roy aside slightly, stepping inside.

roy scoffed before muttered a "yeah sure come in," under his breath, he rose his voice slightly then and continued, "so, what brings you here gilbert?" silence came upon them then as gilbert couldn't seem to conjure up an answer and just sat there, head in his hands. roy almost understood the uneasy silence and his smile faded, he walked over and sat next to gilbert. he spoke almost silently, "i really am sorry about everything. it must've been hell for you and i just made everything so much worse by giving you that letter- you were just the closest thing i had to family and i couldn't afford to lose you-" gilbert scoffed and stood up at that, heading towards the door and exiting through it in one swift motion. he was so angry at himself, how could he have thought that going to talk to roy would solve anything? all it did was open old wounds, he sighed, beginning to run.

a few minutes later, although it felt like seconds to him, he sat in the branch of the cherry tree. he leaned his head against the branch and fell asleep almost immediately.

"gilbert! i'm assuming it's you..yes i'm sure it is— gilbert!" gilbert awoke startled and looked in the direction of the noise, he smiled when he saw anne running towards their tree. he searched his mind for some sort of conversation starter but found it pointless and couldn't come up with anything. this roy thing has really messed with him. he felt anne sit next to him.

"are you alright gil? you seem quite melancholy..." anne spoke softly but in her usual articulate manner and gilbert smiled at her for a bit before responding. "i'm better now that you're here." she scoffed and rolled her eyes but kept a smile on her face as she spoke, "whatever you say gil."

gilbert chuckled and pushed a strand of lose hair behind anne's ear, she shivered slightly because of how cold his hands were. they both laughed quietly. when gilbert spoke again it was almost a whisper, "i'm sorry you had to see my whole ordeal with roy the other day- i should've.." his voice faded and anne placed her hand on his to show she understood. "there's quite obviously some history there and it isn't your fault that you reacted that way, it's alright gil."

gilbert nodded and squeezed her hand, "thank you." they sat there for awhile, talking about just about everything. when the sun began to set they started the walk back to the cabins.

a few minutes later they stood in front of cabin 11. "i'd thank you for walking me back but you were heading this way anyway weren't you?" gilbert giggled, "would've dropped you off even if it meant i had to walk back across camp afterwards, so i doubt a 'thank you' is necessary in this case." anne rolled her eyes as she laughed, and a comfortable silence settled around them.

after a few seconds anne broke it, "well. i should probably get inside before it's dark. i'm glad we got the opportunity to talk gil. see you at some point tomorrow probably?" gilbert smiled, "definitely."

anne giggled, "definitely then."

i've been gone forever and this update is really bad and you've all heard this in every single a/n before ahhhh i'm sorry!

thank you for reading this book, it means everything. now that i'm in winter break i might (hopefully) have the chance to write for more than two second a day and get more updates out for you guys. hope i haven't lost all of my readers, and i hope you're all still enjoying the book.
