Long Day's Journey Into Night

Silent waves beat against the side of the boat;
As we pass by a world that has no heart, no room for us.
They fought for their own freedom,
They'll fight for anything,
But not for us.
Only we can do that.

Long days of horrific torture,
Long nights of sleepless pain.
A longing for home, for comfort
Rang sweet in my ears.
But I pushed it away,
To the back of my brain,
Behind a locked door with no key.

Another dead.
Three more ill.
Casualties and sorrow rule here,
And we were all at their mercy.
Around me, people muttered to themselves,
Babies and children cried,
And voices began to creep into my mind-
Sowing seeds of doubt
And confusion
And anger
And hatred
And heartbreak
And grief
And emptiness
Until I was nothing.
Until all I could do,
Was close my eyes and pray for a better future.
