I sit on my couch, listening to Elizabeth as she recounts her first real fight with Chris. I can see the hurt etched into every word she says, the way her voice cracks just a little. It breaks my heart seeing her like this.
I pass her a glass of wine, watching as she wipes away a stray tear from her cheek. She came over to my place this time, and I'm actually impressed with myself for keeping it clean since she moved out. That alone feels like a small victory.
"Maybe he just needs a day to cool off," I say softly, hoping to comfort her. "He'll come back around, but... I told you not to listen to those texts, Elizabeth."
She nods, taking a sip of the wine. "I know, but it's hard when I know he hasn't told me the full truth about Rebecca. Why does she keep showing up?" Elizabeth's frustration is clear, and I don't blame her. The Rebecca situation is messy.
I frown, trying to find the right words. "Well... the Bryant's raised the Wilsons like they were family. He could be tangled in something that neither of us really understands. Like, rich people problems or whatever," I say with a shrug, hoping a little humor will lighten the mood.
Elizabeth lets out a soft laugh, just a hint of a smile tugging at her lips. "Yeah, rich people and their endless drama. I just... I don't know. I feel like I'm always on the outside looking in when it comes to Chris. There's this whole part of his life I can't reach."
I sip my wine, nodding in agreement. "It's hard when someone's not giving you the full story. You feel like you're missing pieces of the puzzle, right?"
"Exactly." She lets out a frustrated sigh, her fingers tracing the rim of her wine glass. "I just... I thought there wouldn't be any secrets with us."
I lean forward, my voice softer now. "I think he'll come back around. He cares about you, Elizabeth. That's obvious. This Rebecca thing? It's just noise. Don't let it ruin what you have."
Elizabeth glances at me, her eyes still clouded with doubt, but there's a flicker of hope there too. "You really think so?"
I smile, nudging her gently. "Of course. You two are a weird, dramatic mess, but you're good together. And trust me, if Chris had any real feelings for Rebecca, we'd know by now."
