Aira’s POV

Weirdly it wasn’t the hospital that called.  Judging from his surprised reaction something unexpected and bad happened.  He refused to meet my gaze and spoke in a hushed voice but he somehow did in a way that didn’t say I don’t want you to find out; he made me feel like I’m listening in on a private conversation instead. I didn’t get what he could be hiding from me.

I decided to make coffee first and then get an explanation. I left him alone for now and concentrated on making coffee. I made plain black coffee that I loved even more because I knew how much he hated it. I managed not only to make coffee but also drink my cup before he finally hung up and came to the kitchen.

He quietly took the cup and he didn’t even complain over the disgusting taste as he usually does.

“So …?”

I urged him to tell me something but he just waved me off. I was so curious it was about the call I couldn’t sit still and he just ignores it. First he hadn’t wanted me to overhear something and now he didn’t want to explain and then he expected me not to ask questions about it.

I felt frustrated.

“Tell me!”

My demand was ignored as expected but I was nowhere near giving up. I was going to pester him about it until he gave up and told me everything.

He seemed shaken up so it must have been bad news. It made me wonder what could have possibly happened.

“You do know I’m not giving up, do you? Telling me now will just stop our time from being wasted.”

He was still refusing to tell me.

“Tell me! Tell me! Tell me! Tell me! Tell me! Tell me!”

I chanted until he gave up.

“Okay, okay! I’ll tell you!”

I stared at him eagerly not even knowing why I wanted to know so badly. I watched as his face changed when he began telling me. He looked sad and that threw me off for a couple of moments as he wasn’t one for expressing emotions freely and I’ve never actually see him sad before.

“That was my uncle on the phone. He told me… “

He got interrupted by a phone and I wanted to take it and throw it at the wall repeatedly. He on the other hand looked relieved and answered it without finishing the sentence.

“Hello?”

This time it was the hospital calling as they finally noticed I wasn’t there.

I busied myself by making breakfast and managed to listen in on Joshua’s conversation at the same time. I was making eggs and couldn’t decide if I should make them for both of us or just me. In the end I decided I can use them as a way to get information out of him.

“She managed to escape again!”

He really sounded outraged. His acting skills were quite impressive. If I hadn’t known he knew and helped me escape I would have believed it too. His face was I mask I couldn’t read. I had no idea what was going on in that head of his. He was way too good at this.

He paused and listened to the reply and made noises of disapproval.

“How long is it since she got away?”

I focused back on the eggs and realised they were done. I put them on plates and brought them to the table.

“So, you don’t know anything. Did the cameras finally get anything or are they there as an ornament?”
