"Alright kids! Mommy and I will be back from the concert at around midnight, so you two behave yourselves, okay?"
"Okay daddy!" yells Mindy, she was only four years old but was probably more responsible than her older brother, Jake, who was ten.
"Sabrina is going to get you guys into bed at around ten and then we'll be home about two hours later, okay?" yells their mom from the kitchen.
"Really?" asks Jake. "Ten? Awesome!" Mindy was jumping on the couch when she heard how late she could stay up. The parents were finally all packed up and ready to go to the concert.
"We love you guys! Bye!" said the dad. Both parents kissed Mindy and Jake on the head before heading out.
"Drive safely!" I said. "Have fun!" They closed the door behind them and I locked it. Heading to the kitchen to start dinner I said "You two can watch some TV while I get dinner ready, sound good?"
"Yeah, yay!!" exclaimed Mindy. While I was preparing dinner, I heard snow crunching outside, but ignored it thinking it was someone walking their dog or something. Started becoming a bit more tense when I heard creaking upstairs, but assumed that it just had to do with the house being old. When I had finally finished making dinner I realized I had forgotten to lock the back door, so I went to lock it before we ate. When I was doing so I saw footprints outside.
"I'll be right back kids!" I yelled while walking outside. Following the footprints, they lead to an open window, them never returning back from the window. The window lead to the dining room that was near the stairs. I headed back inside, knowing the kids haven't been outside all day because it was too cold. I closed the window and thought It was probably just someone pranking me. Scared to death, I went back into the kitchen, locked the back door, and carried our dinner into the living room, and after a while forgot about the entire thing with my mind inside the show they were watching. Laughter and screaming from tickle fights blocked out the constant creaking coming from upstairs.
