It Never Stops

All I could do was try to ignore him. You see, I have been trying my hardest, but sadly, my life isn't that easy. We had a free day, and you may ask, What's so bad about that? Well, let me tell you a thing: we had to spend the whole day with our partners, aka Mr. Carefree Emo Delinquent Wannabe. So here I am, stuck up against Raurke like glue on a crowded subway train. We are supposed to meet the rest of our class for a picnic up in some park that's in some woods. My mind wandered to the hotel lobby where we dispersed this morning. Simon has been glaring at Raurke, who was standing next to me. Of course, being the arrogant instigator he is, Raurke smiled in a sickly sweet manner and waved to Simon. It took Simon aback a few seconds before he recovered his posture, glaring, and left the lobby. That boy, I thought, rolling my eyes.

"Tempa, are you listening at all?" Raurke's voice interrupted. I looked up and saw him looking down at me, eyebrow raised.

I shook my head and inquired, "What do you want?" He sighed and said, "I was asking where you wanted to go."

I glared at him and said, "Anywhere but here with you."

"Ouch, that hurt me. What did I do to you?" Raurke responded, feigning innocence. I took a breath to control my anger. Did he really ask that to my face? Damn, he's got some nerve. Seeing as we were basically torso to torso, I just cocked my head to the side and responded calmly.

"Are you really asking me that?" He looked at me with a blank expression. After a few seconds, he snapped his fingers and wagged one at me.

"You're mad about the kiss I stole! Don't worry, it was only a kiss," Then he added on, obviously to annoy me, "Plus, you're a bad kisser." He smirked, raven black hair falling into his eyes. I was stunned for a second at his completely nonchalant attitude before I huffed and turned my head away. I looked out the window and watched the dark tunnel as we rattled along.

All of a sudden, I felt someone feeling me up and gasped. I knew it wasn't Raurke because we were standing in front of each other, and plus he was holding on to the overhead bars of the subway. I stiffened up tried to shy away, but there is nowhere to go in the wall of people within the train. Raurke suddenly grabbed me and somehow pushed me behind him, essentially making us switch spots. He faced down my creeper assailant, glaring at him in disgust and punching him straight in the gut, sending him whirling down to the floor, knocking people around. The subway jerked as we slowed down and pulled into the station. The doors hissed open, and Raurke seized my hand, pulling me out of the subway and we started to sprint out of the station.

I was all in a haze. One moment, Raurke is insulting me, then the next he's protecting me. Why does give me mixed signals?

We emerged from the station in the blinding sunlight and a wave of moving bodies. It was almost like a night club on the sidewalk, that's how crowded it was. I tightened my grip on Raurke's hand, not wanting to lose him in the sea of bodies. He pushed and fought his way through the throng, who were pushing back equally. It took forever to get out of the mass of people, and I thought I was about to faint from suffocation. Raurke pulled me around the corner and into a near shop.

"Daisy, are you okay? You're hyperventilating like you just ran a marathon." He said, apprehension in his eyes, holding my arms to my sides.

"Yeah," I said, breathing a bit easier now. A little awkwardly and a bit late, I added on, "Thanks." With that we stood there for God knows how long in nothing but silence coming from us. We could hear the low murmuring of people on the sidewalks; hallow footsteps echoing in the little dark alley and the sounds of speeding cars honking. Raurke looked at his watch and suggested that we should go meet up with the class.

"The park isn't too far from here. By the time we walk there, it should be about time that everyone else should be getting there." I actually agreed with him; I didn't really feel like doing much. We walked out of the quiet shop we had taken refuge in and started our walk. Raurke obviously knew the way and guided us. Like a human GPS, I thought, smiling.

"Why are you smiling?" Raurke asked. I looked over and saw him staring at me, a little twinkle in his eye.

"No reason," I said all too quickly, blushing.

"Whatever you say, Tempa," he said, smiling lightly. We turned the corner and saw a little hill, in which our class was on top of. Trekking up there, we realized, we were (of course) the last ones, and also the only ones empty handed.

Reaching the top, I ran to Ali and gave her a big hug. (I hadn't seen her in like, three hours.) "Aww, Daise! You didn't get anything!" Ali squealed. "Was he that mean to you?" she asked, cradling my head in her arms with a little pout on her face.

"Actually, I didn't want to buy anything at all," I said truthfully. "Nothing caught my eye and the delinquent over there was flirting up a storm with every babe he could see." I grinned and Ali laughed loudly.

The teachers who were chaperoning the trip decided that we should all take a hike to the next hill over, which was HUGE. It felt like an hour to hike it, and all of us were dying as we went along. By the time we reached the top, we all fell over. Some even took it to the extreme, going armadillo style. We stayed there for an hour, running around and playing games. It was just dusk before we all headed down the hill to go back to the hotel. In my peripheral vision, I saw Raurke slip out of sight in the trees that lined the back side of the hill. To see what the hell he was up to, I did the same, falling into the murkiness of the trees. Going over to the edge of the hill, I looked around. I could barely see anything in the falling gloom when something grabbed my shoulders.

I yelped loudly and stumbled. Heart in throat, I tripped and plunged down the side of the hill. I felt an arm try and grab me but I ended pulling them down with me and we rolled to the bottom. We banged down the hill and I hit the bottom, with a large figure landing on top of me. The wind was knocked out of me as the figure quickly got off. I regained my breath as the figure stood up. The moonlight illuminated their face. Of course, it was the one and only Raurke.

He offered me a hand saying, "Sorry, I didn't think you'd fall down the hill." I grabbed it, a little upset (as usual) with him. As he began to hoist me up with practically little to no effort, a large crack rang through the night. I screamed and fell down as pain ripped through my ankle. My vision went spotty from the pain bursting in my ankle and up through my calf.

Raurke kneeled beside me on the leafy ground as I tried to breathe for approximately the seventh time that day. Tears streaming down my face, Raurke gently probed my ankle. Crying out, I cursed him.

"Don't touch it, you nitwit!!!" I screamed. I hated that Raurke was seeing me all a mess on the dirty and insect filled forest floor. Rubbing my good leg with his hand, he tried to soothe me.

"Sorry," he whispered gently. "I needed to look at it." Scooting up to talk to me face to face, he wiped away my tears and brushed back my hair. Looking at me concernedly and squeezing my hand, he said,

"I'm so sorry Daisy, but your ankle's broken."
