"Where were you yesterday?" Ingot questioned as I sat down at the lunch table. Allegra wasn't there yet, but I didn't expect to find Ingot here.
"Why?"
"Allegra had a little run-in with Kyle Stroffman at lunch," she glowered, jutting her chin to point to the tall quarterback with his back facing us. I narrowed my eyes. "Allegra says that there's no lasting damage, but that doesn't make me more inclined to forgive him."
I grumbled and poked at my food, suddenly unable to eat. "Why weren't you there?"
"Same to you, Chans," she shot back. "Look, we're both annoyed at him, okay? Let's just agree on that."
I continued to glare at the hulking idiot on the other side of the lunchroom. I could probably beat him in a fight, given my superiority in –
"What's up with Milo?"
My thoughts cut off as Allegra sat, her hands missing the lunch that she usually ate. I realized that I was still glaring at Kyle, and I quickly averted my eyes before Allegra could follow my gaze. But I was too slow, and she grimaced as she saw who I had been looking at.
"Oh, Kyle?"
Ingot snapped a carrot stick between her fingers, the menacing look surprising both Allegra and I.
"And we're moving on," Allegra scooted a little farther away from Ingot, which brought her closer to me. I could feel my heart start to pick up pace, and I gritted my teeth and focused until I could no longer feel it.
"Milo, can you help me with my Biology homework?" Allegra asked, pulling binder from backpack and slamming it on the table. I leaned over enough to see the question she was pointing at.
"Why didn't you ask me?" Ingot pouted in the corner as Allegra smiled.
"Do you know the answer?"
"Well, no, but I could've figured it out."
"The Endosymbiotic Theory," I provided.
"Really?" Allegra looked impressed.
"Just trust me. I know what I'm talking about." I tried not to care that the statement sounded just a little arrogant.
"Where did you learn that?"
"From school?"
"Yeah, right. Mr. Weiss never went over this in class."
"I didn't say it was from this school."
"You've been to other schools?" this time it was Ingot who asked.
"How old were you if they taught this kind of stuff in school?" Allegra looked up from her paper, and I couldn't help but notice that she looked impressed. Though pleased, I was frantically thinking of an excuse to cover up the fact that I had already been to college.
"I had a slight obsession with science when I was a kid."
Ingot narrowed her eyes. "I don't remember that."
"You two knew each other?" Allegra asked, pointing to the two of us.
"We've been friends since we were born. Our parents made sure of that." Ingot replied bitterly.
"Okay, wait, I'm confused." Allegra held up her hand to shush us. "So you two already knew each other because your parents knew each other, and Milo may or may not be lying about his childhood according to Ingot."
