There is only one of you. Not a single person in this world can be like you, for you are completely unique. Paige didn't realize this, until she wasn't alone.
She woke up like everyone else on Christmas morning, a confident feeling in her blood. It filled her with the energy to get through the day. She had just broken her phone last night after dropping it, so that bummed her out. But maybe she would get lucky and get an upgrade.
The living room was quiet, which she found unusual. Usually around this time her brother would have been tearing the house apart. She didn't really think that was a bad thing, though. It was peaceful. She smiled as she saw a small rectangular box under the tree, decorated in red-and-black wrapping. It was delightful, and it gave Paige hope.
Sure enough, when she unwrapped it, a new phone was sitting inside, like a Faberge egg. She thought it was amazing. She always loved getting a new phone, but something about this was just...perfect. She put it on a charger, and waited for about 5 hours. Still no sign of her parents, which was odd. But oh well.
Finally, it was turned on. And the first thing she did, was open the camera. And she saw it had crystal clear HD resolution. She was in love. She checked out the different filters too, pausing on one that said "Double Take". Wonder what that was. She took a great selfie in it, posed, and the camera flashed. It was...brighter than she expected. She shut her eyes afters, as they kind of stung.
She gasped when she thought she was looking in a mirror. That was crazy. She waved her hand, but the other didn't act like a mirror.
"What are you doing?" She asked, and Paige gasped.
"Wha-what are you?!" She pushed herself back to the wall.
"I'm your Double Take! That's what that filter is for." She smiled. "Call me Double Paige!" Paige frowned. This was kind of creepy. But...maybe this would be helpful after all. Because if she was the original, maybe more would do stuff like clean her house. Or go to work for her. That's awesome!
She took picture after picture, Paige after Paige appearing in her living. She had twelve, including herself. She stood up on a chair, smiling at her little army of Paiges. She gave them all tasks, from sweeping to dusting to monitoring her social media. She was loving this.
She sat down with the phone on the couch, watching the others work. It had been a couple hours after that when Paige noticed they were whispering. What would they be thinking about? One came up and huffed a little.
"The other Paiges and I think it's unfair that you're not working with us." Paige shrugged.
"So what? I made you guys, you gotta work with me. And I'm on vacation, so I'm out. Leaving it to you guys." The Double Paige walked back to the group, where they collaborated for a minute. They walked back over to Paige, picking her up. She thrashed confused. "Hey! Let me down!" She grumbled as she was lifted into the air. The Doubles threw her out of the house and locked the door. She went back onto the porch to avoid the snow, but it was cold. And she hated the cold.
"What am I supposed to do?" Paige thought as she looked at her phone. Wait a minute. If the phone brought them into existence...
She took a deep breath and set the phone onto the porch. She closed her eyes as she slammed down her foot and smashed it. She paused when she completely destroyed it, and screaming from inside ensued. She smiled when she saw the Doubles melt into shadow, leaving nothing behind. That was a relief.
But now she had a bigger problem. She was face to face with the snow, and no way inside. And no phone to call someone to open the door. She grumbled as she huddled in her coat. Worst. Christmas. Ever.
