November 11th

Looking up from your textbook, you finally realize how dark it is outside.

How late is it anyway?

Glancing at your phone screen you realize it's exactly 11:00 pm. Leaning back and stretching your arms wide, you yawn loudly. Across the table from you, Jae looks up too, then proceeds to lean his head to the side, stretching his neck.

"I can't believe it's that late already," you say, followed by another yawn. "And I'm still not even halfway caught up. I'm never gonna finish," you groan craning your neck forward until your forehead is resting on the table.

"I told you not to go see that movie last night," Jae says smugly, unable to keep the satisfaction out of his voice.

"See, now you're behind. That's what happens to people who break their promises. I, on the other hand, already finished all my reading. Right now I'm just getting a head start on next week's."

Raising your head several inches, you glower at him.

"Fine, fine," you mutter sarcastically. "Not all of us can be model students like you. And I didn't break my promise. I only said I wanted  to see the movie with you, I never promised to go. Plus, it's not like I didn't invite you. You're the one who passed up the opportunity to go to the Premier. I mean, those tickets have been sold out for weeks!"

At this comment, Jae just gives you a unimpressed look and goes back to reading.

"Seriously, though, why didn't you come?" you ask quietly, sitting back up and studying his face.

Jae has a cute habit of pursing his lips whenever he's concentrating on something, his lips forming a tiny pout. His eyes continue to track the page, left to right, as he speaks.

"I told you. I honestly had of homework. And..." he pauses, turning the page, "I didn't want to get in your way."

You stare at him, puzzled, a frown creasing the space between your brows.

"Get in my way? Why would you say that?"

"I don't know," he says lightly, still looking at his textbook, but you notice his eyes are now still. "I just thought you know who was going to be there, and I thought you might want to talk to him without a third wheel."

As his words sink in, you grin and snort affectionately.

"You mean Sungjin? He wasn't even there last night. It was mostly just sunbaes from my department that I don't really even know. And since I was the youngest, I kept having to get up and get them popcorn and drinks and things. And you weren't even there to translate the difficult words for me and laugh at my weird jokes. If the movie wasn't awesome, I seriously would have considered leaving."

At your confession, Jae slowly looks over the top of his textbook. His eyes meet yours briefly, and a small grin breaks out over his face before he returns to reading.

"So, I guess you really missed me," he says casually, trying his best to maintain a straight face.

"Shut up," you tease with a smile of your own, kicking his foot under the table lightly.

Looking out the window again, you survey the night sky, smooth and dark.

"I wish I could see the stars again," you sigh, randomly.

As you lean over your textbook again, you feel Jae's foot tapping yours lightly, trying to get your attention. Looking up at him silently, he flashes you a secretive grin.
