As I bring my legs over to dangle over the precipice, straining my wounds enough that I feel a warm stickiness leak onto my skin, I am suddenly and violently yanked back, falling painfully to the floor.
My head clears and I catch my breath, as my body and head is filled with the frightening growling of the wolf. Hovering over me teeth bared into a snarl, it suddenly begins transforming into a human. I can only gape and shake in fear and awe, as my angel is now inches from my face, still snarling.
"Don't. Don't ever, throw your life away." Her fierce and fiery words are spoken huskily, still growling a bit with each word. Her slender yet muscular arms are side by side to my head and her honey brown eyes are filled with fear and anger. Even though she is snarling, I don't feel like I'm in danger. She saved me. She kept me from throwing myself off the balcony.
"You- you're the wolf." I finally stutter out.
She helps me up onto my weak legs. "Yes. Yes I am. You aren't reacting the same way you did for the vampire." She now stood utterly naked in front of me, her eyes softer now in curiosity.
"You made me feel safe. I don't know why... why did you stop me?" My eyes filled with tears and I collapsed onto the floor. My wounds had opened too much, and dizziness and nausea finally overwhelmed me. The wol-, the girl knelt on the floor next to me, with worry in her eyes. "You're bleeding! Why didn't you say anything! I need to get the doctor!" She put an arm under my knees, and an arm behind my back, easily lifting me up to carry me inside to the bed. "I'm going to get Dr. Cullen, he's a vampire too but you don't have anything to fear." She lay me down and turned to the door, but I caught her wrist. "Please, please don't leave me." I said, unable to look into her eyes as tears shamefully leaked from mine.
"Shh, shh. It's okay I'm not leaving. Dr. Cullen!" She shouted at the door, and a second later it opened to a new face, a new vampire. I gripped the girl even harder, caught between my pain and my panic.
"Shh. It's alright." She stroked my face as one might a spooked horse. A bit odd but her eyes were comforting as the blonde bloodsucker came closer. So many reasons to be afraid, and the one that hit me hardest was the slight resemblance to Louis. Tears were leaking out of my eyes as I hindered my flight or fight response.
He stopped a few steps in front of me and kneeled.
"I'm Doctor Carlisle Cullen, I know you're scared but you don't need to be. I have worked centuries healing humans, and my family and I don't feed on them anymore."
I had pressed myself into the girl and was shaking, but truth rang in his words.
"I trust you."
He stood and reached for my shirt, and I flinched back, my heart pounding. He slowly pulled the top down to expose my left shoulder. The shirt was large enough to move a bit, but not quite enough.
"May I unbutton your shirt?" My eyes were shut and pressed into the girl, but I nodded. He unbuttoned two, then began taking the gauze off of my wound.
"You ripped a few stitches, I'll sew you back up in a jiffy."
I could feel the needle pierce my skin as he stitched. The wound was already painful so the stitches didn't add much.
When he finished and cleaned everything, he applied fresh gauze.
"Don't strain that arm at all, you are already quite lucky that the bullet missed your vital organs."
I turned toward him to thank him, but fear overwhelmed me and I stared at the floor as I mumbled it. He turned and left and I slumped in exhaustion. The girl moved out from behind me to set my head on a pillow and tuck me into the sea of sheets and blankets, the fluffy comforter the last to be tucked around me. She turned to leave, probably to find some clothes, but I snaked an arm out to stop her.
"What's your name?"
"Leah, what about you?" She asked as she came back to sit by my side.
"Alex." I said, my eyes shutting without my control. "Can you please stay?"
She pulled away for a second before a snarling ripping noise tore through the room. I felt the lumbering wolf settle next to my feet as I drifted to sleep.
