My eyes opened, dazedly blinking at a white ceiling. Warmth spilled through my whole body and I shut my eyes to the brightness of it all. Finally. I must have at last died. Then pain began clawing at my body. I fully opened my eyes, and let reality settle in.
I thought back. The last thing I could remember was abeautiful girl with glowing copper skin, and feathery short hair, holding me. At the moment, I had thought she was an angel coming to take me away. Her eyes were so beautifully dark, with golden stars shining out of them. I sighed. I probably imagined her.
A puffy, cream colored comforter was pulled over my chest, all the way up to my chin. It blocked me from seeing anything so I pushed myself upright, and gasped. Not because of the pain, it hurt but... There was a wolf. Just sleeping there. An enormous wolf. On the bed. My shock was so profound, that I could only sit and stare at the slumbering grey beast. The wolf filled the whole lower half of the king sized bed, and it curled around my feet. I realized the warmth that I had felt was emanating from the wolf. Finally, curiosity getting the better of me. I scooted closer and reached out a tentative hand, brushing the rough pad on one of the wolf's huge paws. The wolf didn't move, so I ran my hand through its underbelly's fur. So warm and soft. I remembered how when I was younger, I had always wanted a big dog that would sleep next to me. Protecting me. I leaned against the wolf, then curled up beside it and closed my eyes. If the wolf woke and decided to eat me, oh well. Nothing to live for anyways.
* * *
I awoke to find myself once again, back under the comforter. My breath hitched as I finally registered I was in someone's house, that someone had to have touched me. Picked me up. What if this person was like those men? What if I would be hurt again?
I scrambled to get out from under the blankets, accidentally waking the grey wolf that had also changed sleeping positions. It was beside me, and due to its size I had apparently been pushed to the far side of the expansive bed. I felt immediately safe. Its golden eyes stared into mine with intensity and and an almost human expression of worry. Then it yawned a great toothy yawn. I almost smiled. It was just a big wolf, maybe a timber wolf. I had heard somewhere that they were the largest species of wolf. I sat up and patted it on the head, the wolf made puppy eyes at me and tenderly set its head on my lap. Well, whatever kind of wolf it was, it was sweet. I fondled its silky ears and glanced around the room.
A white and gold desk and chair were to my left, clothes were hung over the chair. The desk was littered with small things, paper, pens. In front of me a set of French doors, opening to a balcony where sunlight spilled over and to the bedroom floor. To my right a tall dark bookcase, completely filled, and a shut door.
I brought my legs out from under the blankets, and my bare toes touched the cold hard wood floor. I stepped out and noticed I was wearing someone's pajamas. My breathing hitched again and began violently rubbing my arms up and down tears forming but not falling out. Someone touched me, someone touched me. A wet nose snuffled at my cheek, and I turned to see the wolf staring into me with another worried expression. It tentatively licked my cheek as if to tell me it's ok now. I scratched behind its ear before reaching for the clothes on the chair. I started unbuttoning the shirt on me, and I swear the the wolf rolled its eyes, huffed and turned away from me to give me privacy. Again I questioned how intelligent a wolf can be.
The clothes were too long, I had to roll up the pant legs to walk, but they were nice. The shirt was a dark forest green that buttoned three inches down the front. The pants were just a light grey, but we're so soft and comfy. I went over and leaned on the wolf, still sitting on the bed, turned away.
"You can look now wolfie." I said as the wolf turned back and looked down on me. "So, now I need to find a way out of here without any one seeing." I walked over to the French doors and opened one. The balcony was small and looked out over a forest. I leaned to look down. It was a three story drop and nothing to be able to climb down. I closed the door and sat back on the bed. I looked at the door to my right. So much potential that door carried. It might be locked. Or someone could be waiting right outside to catch me.
Suddenly, as if answering my thoughts, the door opened revealing a man holding a tray. No, not a man. A vampire. A monster.
