Third Person POV
Can's mom was starting to get worried. She had been calling her son since eight in the morning but he wasn't picking up.
She wasn't worried about him missing classes because Lay had told her that classes didn't start till tomorrow. She was worried however because it had been more than an hour since she last called and he was still not picking up. Maybe if she called her husband Prem, he might be able to ask Tin's dad if he knew if Can was still at his house.
Prem took her call and told her that as far as Tin's dad knew, Can was still in his house with Tin.
Can's mom was about to call her son again when she heard a buzz at the gate. In a few minutes their housekeeper went to tell her that there was a young man and a young lady asking for Can and asked her if she would let them in.
Can's mom said she would go to the gate herself to see who they were. She accompanied the housekeeper to the gate and was met by a smiling young lady holding a large plastic food container and was holding it out to her.
The young lady bowed to her and said, "Good morning, ma'am, I'm Jade and this is my cousin Chakrii. We are friends of Can. My cousin goes to the same university as Can but I go to another university but we met at the beach the other day. He mentioned to me that he would like to try some of the dishes that I know how to cook so I decided to bring him some."
Can's mom accepted the food container that Jade was holding out to her.
"Thank you, Jade," she said, :"but I'm afraid that Can is not home at the moment. Do you have his phone number?"
"I do," said Jade, "and I have tried calling him several times but he wasn't picking up so I decided to just bring this dish over to him."
"When he gets home I will tell him to call you, okay?" said Can's mom.
"Okay, thank you, ma'am," said Jade, bowing again, "I hope he will like what I cooked."
"I'm sure he will," said Can's mom before shutting the gate close. She handed the food container to the housekeeper who brought it inside the house.
Can's mom decided to call Can again. She was starting to get really worried when he still did not pick up. She was about to give up when she heard the garage door opening and heard a car drive inside.
Oh, thank god, she heaved a sigh of relief upon seeing Can's Ford Focus being parked.
"Cantaloupe!" she exclaimed as soon as he got inside the house and kissed her cheeks, "I have been calling you all morning! Why did you not take my calls?"
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry, mom, I forgot to unmute my phone!" said Can, taking out his phone and putting the ring sounds back on.
"Why did you mute it in the first place?" his mom asked.
Can blushed a little before answering, "I had been tired from the beach party and wanted to be able to sleep through the night without being interrupted by any calls and then forgot to put the sound back on when I woke up."
"Your friend Jade was here just a few minutes ago," said Can's mom.
Can's heart jumped to his throat.
"She brought you a food container containing a dish that she cooked for you. She said she had been calling you all morning but you were not picking up so she decided to come over and bring the dish to you," said Can's mom.
It was a good thing, then, that I muted my phone, thought Can, otherwise Tin might have smashed my phone to pieces this time.
Can went to the dining room to look at the food container that was on the table. When he opened the lid he was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it smelled.
It was a pad thai dish with assorted sea food in it. He already had breakfast with Tin, but definitely he was having that for lunch.
"Why don't you call her to thank her," said Can's mom when he saw him smiling as he put the lid back on the food container.
"I will," said Can, and tapped a few times on his phone.
"Hello, sweetheart," said Jade. Can blushed at the way Jade addressed him. He was not used to any female addressing him as sweetheart.
"I just wanted to say thank you for the pad thai dish that you brought to my house," said Can.
"It was my pleasure," said Jade, "have you tried it yet?"
"No," said Can, "but it smells delicious and I'm planning to have it for lunch."
"Wonderful!" said Jade, "by the way, I have been calling you all morning but you were not picking up, and when I went to your house, your mom said you were not home."
She paused, waiting for Can to let her know why he had not been picking up her calls and where he had been.
"I spent the night at Tin's house and I muted my phone before sleeping and then forgot to unmute it when I woke up this morning," Can explained.
There was a long silence on the other end.
"Jade?"
"Good bye, Can," it was said so softly that Can almost did not hear it.
