Touring is fun, but it's also exaughsting. I like the traveling, and meeting people, and seeing new things, but it's also a lot of running around. And I've had to readjust my schedual to fit in time to do work on my files and work forms.
The boys finally get a day off and we've all agreed to sleep in today. The hotel we're staying in is a five-star, which I had requested from the FBI and they had covered what we needed for the upgrade for the two nights we're here.
We all stay in the hotel's 'family' suite which actually had two rooms and a kitchenett. There are three king-sized beds and a single, which allows for two of the boys to sleep alone if they wanted. Zach and Jonah called dibs on those and the boys agreed that Jack and I should share the room with one bed in it.
But I'm awoken by the subtle sound of knocking on the suit's door, followed by a buzzing on my phone. It's seven thirty in the morning and I have no idea who would be here at this time.
I check my phone to see a text from a number I recognize but can't quite place. All it says is to go open the door.
I try slip out of bed without waking Jack, but his arm tightens around my waist. "Where you goin' babe?"
"I have to go check something." I mumble, turning to kiss him on the cheek. "Don't worry, I won't be far."
"But we're supposed to be sleeping in today, remember?" Jack groans and guilt wells in my chest. Jack rarley ever asks anything of me and after everything he's helped me through, I owe it to him.
"I'll come right back and we can spend all day in bed if you want." I run a finger along his jaw lightly.
Jack lets go hesitantly and I get up. I put my bra on quickly and leave the room, cracking the door open only slightly as to not let too much morning light in.
I open the main door only to be greeted by two of my friends that I worked with in the FBI.
"Ben, Alexa, what are you guys doing here?" I ask, my voice rough with sleep.
"You're not here alone, are you?" Alex inquires, her honey'd voice hushed as she peers over my shoulder.
I shake my head. "No. I'm with the boys. They're sleeping in today."
"Can we come in?" Ben asks keeping his deep voice quiet as well.
I nod and step back. "Just try not to wake up the boys please."
They both nod.
"Why are you guys here?" I question as they each take a seat at the table.
"You might wanna sit down."
That's never good.
"What's wrong?" I question, hesitantly taking a seat at the table with them.
Ben looks to Alex, who takes a deep breath. "Your sister needs a new guardian."
My heart begins to pound. "Why? My parents would never do anything to lose custody."
"They didn't." Ben says, his near dark-chocolate skin gleaming with stress-sweat. "That's why we were the ones chosen to come talk to you about it."
I wait silently for a further explaination, which Alex provides.
"There was a fire that started on your family's property. It's been ruled out as spontaneous combustion due to gass build-up from a manure pile. It caught the hay field on fire and from there it burned down the house and barn."
Alex reaches for my hand, but I pull it back.
"Colby," Ben pulls my attention onto him. "Your sister was at a friend's house, but your parents were still in the home when it burnt."
