I woke up the next Friday morning ready to see who I was competing against fir Prince James, but I still wasn't sure if I even wanted Prince James or to compete for that matter. Oh who am I kidding, any girl would die for this opportunity, and right now I am probably the most in need of it! But to be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and jewels, is it really worth leaving a life behind? I mean we all know that the way the Royals act on TV is just well it's that, an act. So I guess what I'm trying to get at here is what if Prince James isn't what he seems to be. What if he's snotty, rude, and arrogant just as any other Prince would be? I looked at myself in the mirror, ready to see my competition and right the next afternoon after be taken away. I brushed my long hair out smooth and pulled on my still fairly new dress and walked out to see the awaiting duties for the day.
I walked down the stairs just as one of the boy servants walked through carrying large bags of something slung over his shoulders. Yes, our orphanage has some boys who can't afford much come to work and earn a bit of money, most are about between the ages of sixteen and twenty. This particular one I knew quite well; Will Smith, brown hair, deep ocean blue eyes. Oh, and he was my first ever crush that might actually like me back, so there's another reason that I don't want to be in this competition. There was the slightest chance I could still see him in the castle, but that would only be if he gets recruited to be a castle guard, all seventeen year old get the opportunity, and though Will is only seventeen, I know for a fact that he'll be seventeen in a couple of months.
"Hey Will," I called down to him, he nearly dropped what he was carrying in surprise. He gazed up at me a little bit stunned, and set down the sacks, but returned my call.
"Hi," he replied slowly and cautiously. I smiled girlishly and raced down the steps to greet him.
"You know," I began once I reached him. "It's my last day here since I've been chosen to compete in Prince James's 'Princess Competition'," I continued.
"Really? I didn't know," he asked then said the last bit quietly and he looked quite down-cast.
"Well maybe we could go for a picnic a bit later for lunch out in the field of the property?" I asked hopefully.
"I would like that," he replied the cute smile returning to his face.
"I'll see you later then?" I asked as Will began to pick up his sack of something again.
"Later," he replied nodding curtly and making his way back to the back door.
Once he was out of view I sighed and did a little twirl. Yes, this was my sad little world of flirting, since I've never really had anyone like me, or had a crush for that matter until Will came, the word flirting meant nothing to me; mostly because I was in an all-girl orphanage. I frowned and thought 'Great! Yet another reason I will not win this competition,' my flirting skills are nothing compared to those of girl who are of a higher-class, not to mention they probably were taught how to flirt; and well. But, this opportunity wasn't just to win the prince, it was to win the spot of Princess and one day Queen, but ultimately the Prince wants a partner, he chooses and isn't just going to choose someone who is perfectly fit for the crown. He is going to choose who he wants to marry. Once I realized what I came down here to do, I went over to Mrs. Gallagher's office. Down posted on Mrs. Gallagher's door was a notice. It read:
There are no chores for any girl today, courtesy of Miss Evangeline Stacy. Since she has been chosen we shall spend as much time as possible with her.
