"That's The Thing About Pain, It Demands To Be Felt." John Green.
The Boys~
The air was thick and the energy levels were draining rapidly with the boys. They were stuck and had no idea where to turn. Damien's leg was broken, Raf was unconscious, AJ was on the verge of passing out from blood gushing out of his side, that he had wrapped up with a ripped piece of cloth from his dress shirt. Marcio was the only one capable of walking but he would not be safe on his own.
Aldo's men could return at any moment and they knew they had a better fighting chance together than apart, hurt or not.
They all took a seat on the gravel road and huffed out in pain. They knew they were spent and had to hope for a likely outcome.
Marcio shook his head at his unconscious cousin and his heart ached knowing that if no one came to get them soon, Raf won't make it.
He had never felt this helpless before. When you train they always teach you real life scenarios. But that's all they were, just scenarios.... when it came down to the real live action events one second could mean life or death. This wasn't a drill that if you messed up you could start over.
No. This was a man's life on the line.
Playing with your own mortality, throwing the dice and hoping you land on a favorable number and you come out on top.
Nothing was certain. And Marcio could only wonder how his father and uncles did this for their entire life. And how they still managed to stay alive and keep everyone safe as well.
Damien looked at his older brother AJ gripping his bloody side, with a pained expression on his face. His head tilted back and breathing a little shallow. He had never seen his older brother look so vulnerable in all his life. He was always strong and brave and sure of himself and his ability to lead and keep everyone safe.
But now looking at him Damien couldn't help but feel sorry for him. This mini mission was his responsibility, even though they were all responsible for their actions and the outcome. AJ was the leader, he was supposed to keep his men safe. Even though that was such a pathetic and unrealistic thing to do.
You could never be sure of what was going to happen, and you can't protect everybody all the time. It wasn't humanly possible. Yes they were mafia men and trained so. But at the end of the day AJ did the best he could. He screamed at everyone to jump out the vehicle before the collision and every man had to make the decision on their own. He did lead and tried to save everyone.
And so far everyone is alive. For now... and Damien shook his head at those dreary thoughts. He can't think negative things right now, he had to be positive..
They all had managed to drag Raf off the road and onto the side walk, by the grass field. With the little energy they had left, they succeeded. But the SUV was still in the middle of the road and every time a car passed by and took pity on them, they had managed to get everyone not to call the cops.
That would just tip off Aldo that they weren't dead. And that was the last thing they needed. So they had lied to all the passerby that they had already called for help.
Some even offered to drive them to the hospital but AJ shut them down, he couldn't take the risk of trusting anyone. He was on high alert now and he hated that the decision could cause one of them their lives.
He looked over at the guys and squeezed his eye shut. He knew he couldn't hold out for long again. He was losing way to much blood from the incision that the shard of metal had caused. He had pulled out the shard and nearly passed out from the pain while doing so but he scrambled to hold on and wrap it up as best as he could.
