Sebastian unlocked the door, opened it and walked into the vestibule of the Victorian and saw his son curled up on the sofa sleeping while Judy dozed off, a large cross-stitch hoop laying on her lap. She breathed in deeply as she opened her eyes.
"Oh...you've a guest," Judy said quietly.
Sebastian smiled. "You remember Megan, don't you? James's nanny?"
She stood and gently laid her hoop on the seat of Sebastian's recliner. "Oh my...yes!" She approached her and held out her hand. "How are you, Dear?"
Meg smiled, taking her hand. "I'm better, thanks."
"I'm glad to hear it."
"Megan is James' teacher," Sebastian said proudly.
"Is that right! Oh my, that's wonderful! I'm happy that you found your way back home." She moved to embrace the younger woman.
"Thanks," Meg whispered. "For everything."
"It's what we do, Dear." Judy breathed in deeply, disappointment clouding her pretty features.
"How was he for you," Sebastian asked Judy and she smiled and nodded toward her godson.
"He's always an angel for me."
"How much ice cream did you have to bribe him with?"
She shook her head. "Nary a spoon-full."
Sebastian groaned and closed his eyes as he shook his head. "Oh, I get it. I get to be the bad guy..."
Judy chuckled and nodded as she watched him squirm and he shook his head.
"Well, I suppose I should be getting back, unless you need me to stay a while longer?" She looked toward Sebastian and he looked toward Meg.
"Give Uncle Chrissy a big hug from his Leggy Meggy," Meg joked.
James began to stir on the sofa and he opened his eyes. "Daddy...bring me ice cream...I was goooood...."
Sebastian heard a key in the lock and two seconds later, Alfred walked into the living room, surprised to see his employer already home, heading for his son who was sitting up, rubbing at his eyes. "Ah, Alfred! How was the film?" He picked up his son and held him close and felt his cheeks with his own.
"Riveting," the older man replied, a resigned look to his face as he eyed the younger man. "Here, give him to me, Sir."
"No, it's alright. I've got him." He looked to his still sleepy son. "You're getting vanilla though."
"Awww....but I want strawberry..."
"Vanilla. Or nothing."
James sighed hard and pulled his hands toward his chest and curled his fingers as he hunkered down like a cat in his father's arms. He smiled, flirting with his eyes when he saw his teacher, standing behind his father's butler.
"Hello Jamie," Meg said as she held out her arms toward him, waving her fingers toward herself. James let his body lean toward her and Sebastian stiffened his hold on him and turned toward her.
"He's half your size, Megan..."
"It's okay..." She took hold of the lanky child and and was instantly sorry. "Ooof!"
Sebastian nodded. "Yeah. Told ya."
"It's okay, Miss Bastian's Mom. I can walk." He slid down her body and his toes padded on the carpeting as he released her. He took her hand and pulled her toward the kitchen and she looked back over her shoulder toward her date and laughed silently.
