"I'm gonna be a fireman when I grow up," James announced. "That way I can save my Daddy..."
"What about Tomcat," Topher gently asked of his godson as he held on to him in the chair at Sebastian's bedside.
"Kitties are for kids."
Soon, James' voice became a hum as he slipped back into the astral as Wolf.
He found himself laying on the covered porch of his house and Alison was sitting in a rocking chair knitting baby booties. Wolf opened one eye and then the other. "Oh, you're awake finally. Ya bum!" She held up one of the booties. "What do you think? I think she'll love them. At least I hope so!"
Wolf stared at her belly...it was as flat as he'd ever seen it. He managed to rise to his feet and he stretched...it felt so good to be able to do that...he was sore, as sore as he'd ever been. He wobbled a bit as he walked over toward her and placed his head in her lap for two things: scratches on his ears and to get a good sniff in...he soon realized that she was not pregnant...not even close.
"They're not for me, silly pooch!"
Wolf closed his eyes and snorted...her fingers felt so good rubbing on his ears...she knew exactly how to do it, how to relax him and make him feel good. But then, she always did, didn't she?
He heard footsteps behind him and he growled and looked over his shoulder and she ceased her ministrations immediately. Alison looked up and beamed. "Hey, Indian Dude!"
The Scout chuckled silently. "How is Wolf today?"
"He's only just gotten up. What happened to him anyway? I've certainly seen him looking better!"
"He was too close to an explosion. It broke him."
She set her knitting aside and reached down and cupped her hands beneath Wolf's massive jaws. "Oh, you poor thing! And here I was rubbing all over you!"
Scout nodded. "It's good. It's healing him."
She looked up into his eyes. "Really?"
"You're a healer of some capacity, Alison. At least where the Lone Wolf is concerned. But it's his heart that needs the most healing."
"What happened?"
"His heart has been shattered...twice."
She nodded and lowered her face to his and tenderly kissed the top of his bony head. "Well, I'm here now Puppy. I'll take care of you."
Wolf opened his eyes and emitted a high pitched whine.
Sebastian opened his eyes and saw Topher and Judy talking at the door to his room. He tried hard to swallowed and speak, and only then realized that he was unable to feel his body. His gaze flitted toward the other direction and he attempted speech and only managed a grunt catching Topher's attention.
"THERE YOU ARE!" Topher cried out as Judy ran out of the room for assistance.
"DADDY!" James pounced on the bed as tears filled his eyes...it should have hurt, judging by where his son was on his body, but he felt nothing. Topher stood over him.
"Don't panic. I want you to blink once for yes and twice for no. Got it?"
Sebastian blinked once, pushing tears from his eyes and let out a long groan.
"You've been heavily sedated, in a kind medically and magically induced coma. Your back was broken, Bastian. The wrought iron fence is the only thing that survived the blast besides you. It's now in your rear garden. Thought you might want it as a souvenir if you will? To remind you that those fuckers CANNOT BREAK YOU!"
