White Christmas

The biting wind numbs the girl's skin. Her rigid body shivers while her teeth rattle and click. Her hands are raw and red, and she nestles them in her pockets. She breathes cold, wispy air into the atmosphere. Her heavy boots clunk rhythmically on the sidewalk, as a soft whistle exits her lips. She hears someone call out to her: "Holly!"

She looks up and waves.

The stout brunette beckons her to enter her store. Inside the cozy bookshop, shelves are crammed with all sorts of books. Festive music plays around her, and the scents of pine and gingerbread waft up to her nose. Lucy brings her a mug of hot chocolate and a warm smile. "You looked like you were freezing to death out there! I was just about to start closing up the shop, thank goodness I saw you before you turned into an icicle. What are you doing strolling around in this weather anyway? A blizzard's about to come!"

"That's what I'm hoping. I want to be outside when the first snowflake falls."

Lucy raises an eyebrow. "You sure are dedicated. At least let me get you some hand warmers." The girl nods and sips the creamy hot chocolate. Lucy comes back with some disposable hand warmers and a funny-looking hat. "Merry Christmas, Lucy. Thank you for everything."

"Of course. It's Christmas Eve, and what are friends for?" says Lucy. The girl plops the hat on her head, says her goodbyes, and goes on her way.

She is rounding the corner to her house, when she feels icy powder kiss her face. She looks up, and sees a myriad of snowflakes, puffs of white drifting down in the air. Flecks of ice powder everything around her. She smiles. White Christmases weren't anything like the ones that appeared in her dreams. They were even better because they were real.
