The annoying tick of the clock on my bedside table helped me keep track of the time as I waited impatiently for Karter to get home. He had called earlier to let me know that his boss needed a babysitter and according to him it was the perfect job for me and I had an interview later this afternoon.
I'd taken the liberty of having a quick shower and changing into something more interview appropriate and styling my hair into a quick french twist, leaving some stray strands to hang and frame my face. Make-up was minimal and shoes were comfortable black flats. I was more than ready to be interviewed having securely concealed my work permit and other necessary documents in a plastic folder which currently had a place in my bag.
Glancing over at my clock once again, I realized only 2 minutes had past, making it 5:22 p.m. I took a deep breath and sighed, Karter should be home any second I thought, grabbing my bag and heading downstairs to wait on him in case he was in a rush. Flicking on the tv just for some background noise, the news was repeating the latest headlines that had been released within the last hour and it was halfway through a report.
"...O'Connor the third has been given full custody of his younger brother Jack. More details later during the 7 o'clock news. Stay tuned."
Eyes wide and mouth hanging open, I flopped back onto the couch. "Wow..."
"Wow what?" Karter said, coming into the living room.
"HOLY SHIT!" I gasped, my hand immediately landing over an erratic heart. "Don't do that!" I cried, jumping up from the couch and twirling around to look at him. "Sweet Jesus, are you trying to give me a heart attack?"
Loud laughter brought me out of my small rant and I looked over Karter's shoulder to meet an all too familiar pair of tawny eyes. "You brought him?"
"Uh...'him' can hear you." Alex said, waving his hand at me and giving me a sarcastic smirk.
"What?"
Scratching the back of his head, in what I knew was an 'oh-shit-I've-been-caught' action, Karter grimaced slightly and moved from foot to foot looking anywhere but at me. "Kal...Alex is one of us...he's a wollip..."
"Oh..."
"Yeah."
"So is my soon-to-be boss one of us as well?"
"Yeah, mostly everyone is..." Karter trailed off.
"Okay the two of you are so awkward, who knew you were a twin. Anyhow, let's get going, Hayden gets really impatient if he's kept waiting for too long and we're already late." Alex said quickly, his words rushing together in a comfortable melody.
"Yeah let's go Kal." Karter said heading out the door followed closely by Alex. Grabbing my things and locking up, I made my way to my car and slid in waiting for Karter and Alex to reverse so I could follow behind their cars to my interview.
After a 20 minute drive I pulled up behind Karter and Alex, parking in front of a smaller version of a mansion, but not small enough to just be labelled as a house. Wow. Did everyone in this town own expensive homes and cars?
Taking a deep breath to settle the nerves that were quietly creeping up on me, I grabbed my bag and slung it over my shoulder as I got out of my car and straightened my blouse, brushing imaginary crumbs from my skirt and checking to make sure I didn't have any scuffs on my flats. Satisfied that everything was in order, I strode over to Karter and Alex who stood waiting on the sidewalk.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine. Hayden won't bite, I promise!" Karter murmured, as his big hand engulfed mine giving it a light squeeze. Trusting that he knew his boss well enough, I straightened my short frame in an attempt to feel taller and responded "Okay." my voice suddenly deciding that it should pull a disappearing act on me as it came out in a whisper. Way to go Kallie, I thought sarcastically to myself, annoyed that I was still weak.
