WILL HE
CHAPTER TENThud. Thud. Thud.
The glade shook with the ferocity of the boys who governed their different jobs. The boys who worked for them surrounded the gaps between the boys, making sure no escape was guaranteed.
Newt stood next to Alby, tense and uncomfortable. The two most important boys were stood side by side, positioned next to the heavy concrete door of the wretched maze.
Newt's face displayed a look that could only be described as forlorn. Alby glanced at the fair haired boy beside him, the boy who was not trying to hide his distress at the situation at all.
This caused Alby to frown slightly as he considered how passive they were supposed to be when this unfortunate event was to happen. It not only caused Alby a great deal of concern but worry directed towards his closest friend.
The boys Smashed their wooden lances against the ground, Picking up their paced, faces twisted into looks of concentration. Every boy was staring straight ahead not daring to glance towards Ernest.
Ernest who was currently struggling against his binds as two more boys pushed him with a vengeful force into the centre of their almost circle. Ernest's eyes darted around in desperation at each boy who had now stopped banging the floor. He pleaded, he begged as the boys still refused to meet the distressed boys eyes.
Finally Ernest's eyes landed on Newt, Newt who was full of love and despair. Ernest stopped struggling momentarily and smiled weakly at the boy he loved, reassuring him for a split second that he understood.
Newt felt his breath increase as Ernest snapped out of his sanity and began to scream and beg as he was pushed the final few centimetres through the heavy doors that had started to close.
Newt pushed himself against the solid wall, holding himslef up as he had to listen to the pleads and curses of Ernest - the only boy who kept him sane in the confines of the maze.
Newt listened as the doors closed completely with a final click. They locked out Ernest's voice. With that final click Newt knew he was gone.
Alby watched as Newt slid down the wall he'd backed up against, Newt had not uttered a word. The silence from Newt set Alby on edge as the rest of the boys disbanded. Only a few of Newts closest dared glance back.
Newt flinched and snapped his head up when he felt a hand on his shoulder. To his dismay it wasn't Ernest, just Alby, confirming that it hasn't been a bad dream.
Swallowing his feelings Newt took a deep breath and made his way to the gardens not before shaking of Alby's almost incriminating hand. His hand might aswell have burnt his skin.
The emptiness Newt felt hurt more than the absence of pain he should feel. Newt just couldn't grieve, he needed to keep going, he needed to pretend. He knew that Ernest wouldn't want him to wallow and he knew the other boys depended on him not to break down.
