The cheers from our school and other supporters seemed to echo through the area even as we walked off the court and into the locker room. Our game had been held in the morning and in the afternoon, Andrei's team would face their opponent. I knew he and the other team had been watching us, so we had to be on our toes no matter who we faced.
After relaxing for a few hours we headed out to the court by the beach to practice a play that the coach had been working on. We had several plays that we kept for facing other teams during a really important game, so even if they had been watching us play they wouldn't be able to guess our next move.
We went training late into the night and only returned to the dorm when it was nearly twelve at night. At some point, the twins had passed out and the coach was holding them as she shouted at us, but that would not be enough to wake them.
The coach decided that she would keep the twins with her for the next day so I could get enough sleep because we had a day of rest before the two surviving teams went against each other. I went back to the apartment and took a quick shower before melting into bed, I wouldn't wake until after one the next day and then spent the rest of the day eating and lazing around the apartment.
I spoke to the twins on the phone only to find out that they had gone off to some field trip with the coach and a group of other children that were around. It would seem that I wasn't the only person that brought their sibling with them, but maybe I was the only one who brought them under my circumstances.
___
The next day we all gathered in the locker room at two to go over the play, our game would start at four p.m and go into the night. We found out that we were facing off against Andrei's team and that we had no idea what to expect from them. I was excited and had high expectations for what our game would be like.
It wasn't long before we were all getting ready to go out on the court and soon we were standing face to face with Andrei's team. He had this blank look on his face and his mismatched eyes were focused on the ball soon we both stepped forward and the whistle was blown, the ball was tossed in the air.
I jumped first and even though Andrei was taller than me I was able to knock the ball to my team and landed heavily on the court, I ran to them and soon the ball was being dribbled down the court and passed between our teammates, the ball landed in one of our guys hand as we blocked the path of the other teams players and he landed a slamdunk starting us off.
The first quarter passed quickly with my team staying in the lead, though Andrei's team was only behind by five points which made our team and coach uncomfortable. The play was changed going into the second quarter and we maintained our lead soon going further and further in the lead, but that was soon cut short.
Andrei got his hand on the ball and landed a three-pointer, we moved to get the ball but soon we were being run down and the coach called for the first time out on our side. She unleashed hell on us before switching out our game plan and soon we were back on the court and we started to play in a way where we were able to stand against Andrei's team.
After that, we were able to maintain a good pacing with them so neither team was too behind and into the third quarter we had the same score and it stayed like that for the rest of the game, the whistle was blown and we came out with a tie, even though it displeased the players and coaches, some thought it was better than either of the teams losing.
We all shook hands, patting each player on the back as we moved off the court, I walked to the bench taking my water bottle as I sat down and squeezed the last of the water into my mouth gulping it down. I took the rag off the bench and dried off just before I heard two little voices calling to me and turned around to see the twins running to me.
I stooped down allowing them to throw their arms around me and stood up in one move with them causing them to laugh loudly the players on my team smiled at their antics and soon we were walking off the court. We decided to just return to our own places since they were close by, the twins were wide awake so soon as we got to the apartment the door was opened and we were inside.
I put the tv on and set the twins down in front of it, I got them some cereal to eat as they watched their show and used the time to take a shower and change into a pair of joggers and a t-shirt. I took the dirty clothes from the week and put them in the basket, I decided to just wash all the clothes and pack it away so that when we got back I didn't need to handle the laundry for a while.
I found myself sighing at the thought of the trip coming to an end, I didn't want to go back there, our life here was good, we were happy here and there were things that I didn't need to do while we were here. All of this would come to an end in just a day and I would be back to my shitty life, doing the same horrible things over and over just to get by.
I shook the thought from my head and got up going out the room with the basket, I placed it by the door and checked on the twins, they were sitting with their eyes glued to the tv covered in milk and cereal causing me to shake my head. I took them to the shower and gave them a quick bath, I changed them into matching rompers and tops, placing their sandals on their feet before their caps were placed on their heads.
I took their clothes and put it in the basket and looked around taking my keys and phone with me as we left the apartment and went down to the laundry room, I set up the machine and set the first set of clothes in it and sat down watching as the twins played. They chased each other around the room, yelling and laughing but they were calm enough to stay where I could see them.
I took my phone out my pocket and started scrolling through my contacts, I would need to do some work the same day I got back and so it would be best for me to call ahead and see if any of my current clients would want to see me. I didn't like taking new customers, it scared me that I never knew what they would do, of course, they would say what they wanted before we met but I could never be certain, I knew from experience that it was best to stay with a long-time customer.
I sighed and got up to switch the clothes and glace at the twins that now sat on the floor next to me playing pattycake, they sung and laughed when once of them missed and I arched my brow when I saw for every miss they got they would be hit. I laughed when Mia grinned evilly every time she won and watched until her knocks started to turn Liam's hand pink, I told them not to go so far and they nodded, going back to their game.
I switched out the laundry again and began folding the first set that came out the dryer, the sound of my phone ringing had me picking it up and moving out the room after I told the twins to stay, I could see them from where I stood but they wouldn't be able to hear me. The person was one of my first clients so I recognized his voice the minute he spoke, I looked around and listened as he spoke, asking me when I would be available for us to meet.
"I'll be back in town the night after tomorrow, we could meet then, where and when you want, of course."
He hummed and I looked around when he chuckled, my skin started to itch when he started saying what he wanted with me and then we came to an agreement and I hung up the phone returning to the room. I rubbed my arms and took a deep breath before returning to my laundry after reminding myself that what I was going to do was necessary.
