"Luna," a voice called from across the room and my heart couldn't help but skip a beat. I had grown too comfortable around him. Alpha Jasper appeared, he was dressed in a black suit that made heat rise to my face. "Do you want to come to a party my business is holding?" He asked and continued to explain himself when I cocked my head to the side, "we're trying to make a business arrangement with another company but first have to welcome them." I nodded in reply and he smiled a unsure and tentative smile that I couldn't help but return. I really needed to get ahold of myself. Just because he was the first to be kind to me after many many years doesn't mean I should be head over heels for him. He produced a bundle of clothes that I soon found was an identical suit to the suit that he wore as I put it on in the bathroom. I gave a shy smile as I left the bathroom, mentally slapping myself as I got into the passenger seat of the Alpha's car. The office wan't far away but he turned past the office and continued down the road. I cocked my head to the side and furrowed my brows. Noticing, Alpha Jasper chuckled. "You're getting familiar to this place," he said before explaining himself, "we can't invite them to the office. We have to take them out for dinner. I rented out a ballroom and got some fancy takeout." The way he said "fancy" made me crack a smile but I instantly hid it. "Did you bring your notepad and pen?" he asked after a couple of uncomfortable moments of silence. I nodded and pulled them out from my back pocket and he smiled, "good." It's not like anyone would talk to me and I was beginning to regret my decision on agreeing to go. I don't know why I was so eager to join him at the party, my head just reacted before my mind could. Maybe it was the thought of him being around other people that made me uneasy.
When we arrived, Molly greeted us. "Alpha!" she said with a bow. She wore her hair up in an elegant bun that exposed her long neck and pronounced collarbone and swept to the sides like wings of a swan. "Our guest are waiting for you," she said.
"And you weren't entertaining them?" Alph Jasper asked in a stern tone that I hadn't heard since the day I first met him at the office.
"I left them with Jack and Hannah," Molly justified but Alpha Jasper just scoffed.
"Your job is to make sure our guests feel welcomed" Alpha Jasper said with a low growl, "That's not Jack and Hannah's job." Before she could reply, Alpha Jasper left her at the entrance of the building in a few long strides and I hurried after him giving Molly an apologetic look over my shoulder. I thought I saw her face twisted into a sneer but then she was giving me a half grimace half smile. It must be hard working under an alpha, even for the higher ranks.
My thoughts of Molly instantly flew my mind as I stepped into the ballroom. Velvet curtains were pulled back to show off humongous glass windows that revealed a small well kept garden and fountain. Even though we were in the middle of the city, they managed to fence in some space to make it look like an artificial forest. A huge glittering chandelier hung from the ceiling of the ballroom like drips of dew. Candles perched on the chandelier like birds on a branch as they swayed with the soft melody of the music. There was a live orquesta playing in the background accompanied with a grand piano. Instantly my eyes were drawn to the long tables of food and the waiters who where carrying around refreshments. They wore suits and had their hair nearly tied back. I looked at them enviously, they must be the lowest ranks in the pack and yet they were treated way better than me. They were treated like the normal ranks to higher ranks from the pack I came from. The quick intakes of my breath and the a heavy pain in my chest made me look away. I didn't want to think of my past. Not now. Not ever. Instinctively my eyes looked for Alpha Jasper. He stood in a cluster of professional looking people. He had his back to me but I could tell he was acutely aware of my presence and my breath slowly became regular once more but the pain in my heart stayed. It was a heavy reminder of who I was and what role I played in this world.
A tap on my shoulder sent me spinning out of my thoughts and I flinched, ready for the blow that would follow. When none came, I opened my eyes and looked for the source of the tap. Molly stood by my side with an uncertain smile. "Sorry," she said a sympathetic smile, "I didn't mean to scare you." I shook my head and smiled. "Thank you back there," she said, referring to when we arrived at the party, "Alpha always seems to chew my head off for the minor mistakes I make." I nod in reply. Molly was acting awfully kind but I didn't question her. She must have a hard time at work the day I was brought into office and I couldn't say I looked like anything special — of course she would propose I be taken to the prison . "I know you can't speak," Molly started before she moved closer to me, pinning me to a wall in a painful grip, "but I see you have a paper. Have you told Alpha anything about that filthy pack of yours." That's why she was being kind. I winced but made no move to escape. From past experience I learned I should take the initial anger than provoke the assailant further by trying to escape. My eyes frantically looked the Alpha but Molly grabbed my chin and forced me to look at her. "Not so fast little wolf," Molly hissed in my ear, her canines flashing. She reminded me of the woman who had branded me before I left my old pack. The two women were quiet and beautiful but they were as deadly as a snake if you are not ready. They struck fast and quickly. "You may have fooled the Alpha, but you can't fool me," Molly started, "I know your secrets. I know you were Alpha Grayson's fiancé. What do you want from me and my alpha?" My heart skipped a beat at Molly's words and my lips turned back in a small snarl before I hid it, knowing how my emotions can be manipulated and used against me. I was not afraid of the threat behind Molly's words but of the way she came across the information. Alpha Greyson hated the idea of me as his fiancé and would rather murder a whole town than let the words get out that my family betrayed him — that I gotten so close to him and he didn't even notice. Before I could reply, a low growl came from behind Molly.
"What do you think you're doing with my mate?" Alpha Jasper asked as he grabbed me by the arm and pulled me to his chest in a protective stance.
Molly gave him an innocent smile. "I was merely asking her of her history."
"Are you still on about this?" Alpha Jasper asked, irritation lacing his voice, "I already told you to not worry. You have one job, Molly, and that is to entertain the guests. Now go." Alpha Jasper said, pointing to the group that he had been taking to previously but all Molly brushed him off.
Molly's jaw clenched but she kept a smile painted on her face. "But don't you want to know about your mate?" She asked as she took a seductive step towards Alpha Jasper. A growl rose in my throat but I held it back as I pressed myself into the Alpha's chest, forcing him back a step. Molly rolled her eyes. "Of course not," Molly sneered, "you're too busy with playing boyfriend with your girl. Of course you need me. Your image would be tarnished if they only saw you."
"Molly," Alpha Jasper said with a warning growl but she ignored him.
"Some advice, if you're trying to not appear gay," Molly said with a scoff of distain, "try not to make both of the partners look like a male."
Alpha Jasper was seething under his now too calm and blank face. "Get out," was all he said once Molly finished her rant.
Molly blinked. "Excuse me?"
"You're fired," the Alpha said in a dangerously low voice.
"Oh I see who he hates you so much. I can't believe I was so head over heels for you," Molly said with a small laugh as she covered her eyes with a hand. "You always run from your problems and hide behind a mask."
In a swift step, Alpha Jasper reaches Molly and pins her to the wall. "Just get the fuck out," Alpha Jasper hissed in her ear. When he draws back and gives her a rough shove in the direction of the exit, where his hands had touched Molly's flawless skin, her arm was punctured and droops of blood seeped down her arm.
Molly laughed bitterly as she clutched her arm, making the blood flow evens stronger that caught the attention of some of the other people in the room. "I was never truly part of you pack, wasn't I? You can't keep your secret forever Alpha. This is goodbye for now little wolf," Molly hissed. As she stalked her way out of the room, she called over her shoulder, "this is one last word of advice Jasper, keep your mate close."
