It was early in the morning when I woke up. The smell of coffee was strong in the air and when I entered the kitchen, I noticed the Alpha was not alone. Perched atop a stool was Lydia. Her long black hair fell down her back like a waterfall and I couldn't help but be mesmerized every time she moved. Lydia was petite, like a bird or a fairy. She smiled at me when she saw me and waved me over. "How are you feeling?" She asked, "are you completely healed now? It was nasty of your old pack using wolfsbane on you. I've never encountered that much wolfsbane in one's system." I cocked my head to the side but nodded. The first time I've ever been exposed to wolfsbane was the last night I was with my pack, but I didn't argue with her. She must have never seen wolfsbane before in her peaceful pack. "I'm glad you're doing better," She said with another brilliant smile. "So... how is the Alpha doing it for you?" She asked, wiggling her eyebrows. I cocked my head to the side again but I smiled and nodded. The Alpha was very generous and kind to me, he treated me better than anyone in my old pack after my parents' betrayal. When I glanced at the Alpha for the first time since entering the room, his face was bright red.
"N-no," He stuttered, "it's not like that! I'm not doing anything." My eyebrows furrowed at his statement. He had done so much for me that I could never repay him for. For one, he saved me from Molly.
Lydia laughed and waved the Alpha off. "Sure sure! You're secret is safe with us," she said, giving me a knowing wink and I nodded. I didn't know what she meant by secret but I agreed with her anyways.
"I swear I told no secrets," the Alpha said in a stern voice.
Lydia instantly recovered from her laughing fit and looked straight into his eyes. "Jasper," She said sternly. When he didn't reply and broke eye contact, she instantly got onto her feet and grabbed him by the tie of his suit, pulling his face to her. "You have to tell her," she hissed in his face, her green eyes flashing. I let in a quick breath and Lydia took notice. Lydia let him go, giving him a rough shove away from her in disgust. She then gave me a small smile as she whipped her hands. "Please stick with Jasper," she said, "I promise Jasper the best person I know. He just had some trust issues." With that, she left.
When the door slam shut, Alpha Jasper ran his fingers through his hair. "So," Alpha Jasper said as he poured me a mug coffee and slid it across the counter. "Today I have a day off from work. Why don't we do something fun together?" He looked at me with hopeful eyes and all other thoughts fled my mind. I nodded eagerly, instantly giving myself a mental slap. Yes, I had never had alone time with him since I had... arrived? Was that the best word? Kicked out of my last pack? Found? Brought in for interrogation? That's beside the fact. My point is, I shouldn't have cared how or even if I spent time with Alpha Jasper. It wasn't like I was going to accept the mating bind anyway. I rather drive myself crazy than be under someone else's control again. But Alpha Jasper's radiant childish grin didn't even let me consider the idea of turning back time and denying his offer to spend time with me. "I'll be right back," Alpha Jasper said as he backed out of the kitchen, jumping on one foot and then the other, before racing out of the room. "I need to change," he called over his shoulder. A little laugh escaped my lips that I quickly pushed down deep into my stomach to stop it from escaping. He acted like a little five year old who was offered ice cream...
"Da— daddy!" I cried in gasps as big wet tears fell down my chubby face. I had climbed into a tall tree but then fallen, scraping my arms and legs in the process, trying to stop my fall.
"My little moon, what did I tell you about climbing trees?" My dad chuckled as he scooped me up into a hug. I shrieked in excitement as he spun me around. It felt as if my stomach had butterflies in it as he spun me in the air. I stretched our my arms, imagining the breeze was my wings catching the wind.
"Arthur!" A sharp voice yelled across the field. "Put my daughter down this instant!"
"Oops, mommy is mad at us," my dad said with a guilty look as he set me down on my feet. My mom had told him constantly to not spin me high in the air, but sometimes my father would forget.
"Mommy is always mad," I said begrudgingly and my dad laughed.
"Don't let her hear that, little one," my dad said.
"I'm not that little!" I protested as I stood up on my tiptoes and put my hands on my hips, trying to look intimidating to my dad.
"You have to eat more to be taller than me," my dad said, giving me a smirk.
"I thought my little girl was going to die," my mom said when she reached us. She gave my dad a playful slap on the shoulder, "if only you would swing me around like that." My dad's eyes darkened and I cocked my head to the side.
"Oh believe me," my dad said in an unusually low voice. "I can do a lot more than that."
What are they talking about? "Mommy?" I asked, pulling on the hem of her white dress.
"Yes sweetie?" My mom said, breaking eye contact with my dad.
"What are you talking about?"
My mom's face reddened. "Nothing! Nothing," she reassured herself, "you'll understand when you're older." My face turned into another frown, hating the fact that I was always being told I was too young. My mom looked frantically around. "Look!" She said, pointing at a small cart, "they're selling ice cream." My eyes lit up, already tasting the sugary sweet smooth ice cream on my tongue. I raced across the field, hopping and turning back every few footsteps to make sure my parents were fallowing behind me.
Tears welled up in my eyes of that memory. I hadn't had many good memories since my parents had died but for some reason Alpha Jasper had reminded me of one. But there was also something familiar about this memory and these feelings I am having now. Thinking back, I think I now understood my dad and mom's interactions a little better and I realized my mom was trying to distract me from the bigger point. Something I still have difficulties understanding. Mom. Dad. Why couldn't you be here to show me the way? Why have I lost faith in the mating bond?
