Chapter 7

The sun was just peaking over the horizon, sending blood red rays of light across the glass city. I heard quick steps followed by a less elegant stride, struggling to keep up, and I instantly landed in a defensive stance, keeping my body close to the ground as I hid behind a bush.

The voice became distinguishable. "Alpha," Jack said as he half walked half ran behind Jasper. "We found news about Molly." My body stiffened at the mention of Molly.

But Jasper showed no reaction. He— or rather she casually turned her head from one side to the other cracking her neck before pulling her shoulders back, flexing the lean muscles on her back through her tight suit.

"Umm... you see... Molly seemed to have some connections to the Moonshine Pack."

"The what!" Jasper hissed, her head whipping to look at Jack directly in the eyes.

Jack flinched. "Th— the Moonshine pack! The one your mate is from."

"I know that." Jasper snapped. Jasper suddenly glanced to the side, as if feeling my presence and her eyes widened. "Go in before me," Jasper said before shoving Jack through the doors before he could protest.

Jasper crouched down, brushing her hair out of her face as she looked at me directly in the eyes. She opened and closed her mouth, but no sound came out. Her eyes glistened with the threat of tears before throwing her arms around me. I stiffened, suddenly feeling on edge. "I'm sorry Luna. I really am. I fell apart yesterday but that is no excuse for my lies. My lies to you and my lies to my pack." I relaxed a little, my shoulders slumping into Jasper's body. "Please forgive me," she whispered into my shoulder. I felt wetness where her face was and I knew she was crying without even looking. Soft breaths came in and out of her mouth and for the first time, I saw her not as an alpha but as my mate. My arms came up and I softly wrapped them around Jasper's fragile body.

"It's," I said in a hoarse voice before clearing my throat and swallowing a couple of times. "It's alright."

Jasper pulled back and gently grabbed my face in her hands "you can speak! Your voice sounds beautiful." I smiled and she smiled back. A radiant smile that was nothing like her shy smiles she would give when we first met.

"Let's start over," I said, my voice growing steadier, "let's get to know each other before rushing into being mates." Jasper cocked her head to the sides and her joy seemed to deflate but she nodded. "That doesn't mean I don't want you as a mate, I just don't know if I want you as a mate either. I don't really know you, and I need to know you before loving you." I stumbled out all the words that have been filling my mind. "Besides, I'm not even sure if I'll be a good luna. What will people think of me?" Words fell out my mouth like a damn breaking open after being held back for years.

Jasper gently placed her finger over my lips and my face grew hot. Jasper smiled at me with a soft smile that lit up her eyes. "I would love to get to know you." She stood up and held her hand out for me.

"I don't need help getting up," I mumbled. I hesitated before taking begrudgingly her hand. "But I'll take it this time." When our fingers connected, sparks danced over my skin where it touched Jasper and up my arm. My face flushed and I looked down at my feet.

"I'm sure you don't my Luna, but I can't help but want to give you all the help I can give," Jasper said giving my a sappy smile before walking into the office building, hand in hand with mine.

Molly wasn't at the front desk, instead sat Jack. He gave a nod of acknowledgement as Jasper and I walked straight past him and into Jasper's office.

Jasper sat in her chair and tried to draw me into her lap but I refused. "Let's try to be friends for now," I said as gently but as firmly as I could. I sat in the seat across from Jasper on the other side of her desk. "So," I drawled, unconsciously trying to sound sexy. I looks straight into her eyes, trying not to back down from her intense stare. "Tell me about yourself." I added an innocent smile to hide my embarrassment.
