I sat quietly in my room with the radio on, listening to the news from this night. It was mostly about how stunning the Prince and Princess were on a gala that the royal family had the other night. How the Prince started becoming of age to choose a wife. Because apparently being nineteen and single wasn't okay? I decided to turn it off and kept trying to concentrate on the stitches I was doing on the dress in my hand.
I could feel the cold air coming in from the window, leaking in. It is spring here in the Whites, so the snow was still laying on the streets and covering the trees like a winter wonderland, or for us, a pain in the ass, if you will excuse my language.
Just as I was going to quit on the dress for today, seeing as the sun was almost down outside, my mom came rushing into my room, with a weird look on her face.
"Liviana! My dear, sweet Livia. Have you heard the news?" I sighed.
"No, I have not 'my sweet Mother'," I said in a mocking voice. She ignored my attitude and instead continued.
"So they were talking about the Prince coming to age and well, long story short, there is going to be a new selection! Aren't you thrilled?" I sighed once again. I already knew what she expected me to do. To sign up for the selection. To try to become the new Princess.
"Well lovely for the Prince then. I already know what you are going to ask from me and my answer is absolutely no. I will not sell myself for some entertainment to the people of Illea. But you already knew that, just as I knew what you would ask." Just because I didn't want to sign up for the selection does not mean that I didn't want to know what she wanted to offer me for signing up.
"Yes, but I hoped that you would consider it. If you get elected, then we would get a lot of money to save and if you would become one of the elite, well then your whole life would change!" She paused and I could see how serious she got.
" We really need this, and it isn't even certain that you would get elected in the first place. Surely you could consider it? If not for me and your dad, then for you?" I rolled my eyes. As sixes, we didn't earn a lot. We absolutely had it better than most sixes, all of our had jobs, but usually, a family of sixes had a lot of children to work, and well... My parents only have me. They tried to have children and just as they gave up, I came. So they have always been extremely protective of me, but I understand why.
"Okay, fine. You made your point. I will only do this because I don't even think that I will be elected, and to make you and Dad happy. Okay?" Mom smiled happily.
"Okay! Then we will go and tomorrow morning and fill in your application!" She rushed out of my room, probably to tell Dad.
I decided just to go to bed early, but before I was going to choose a dress to wear tomorrow. I guess that if I am going to do this, I am going to do it properly.
All my dresses in the wardrobe were made by me. They were not as fancy as the dresses I made for the four's and three's, as they were made of the remaining textiles that were left. But they did make me look like a nice five or an okay four, so I was pretty happy with them.
As I then laid in bed I went completely blank. I was really tired from stitching all day, so falling asleep wasn't really a problem.
