The first days after announcing that I was supposed to be in the selection were a complete blur and still is. I got a lot of gifts and greetings, everyone hoping that they had just met the new princess-to-be. I was just hoping that they wouldn't get disappointed when I got sent home.
The day where I was supposed to travel to Angeles was closing in, just one day away, a man came knocking on our door. He obviously worked at the palace and seemed not to be particularly amused to be there.
He presented himself as Mr. Green and he was sent from the palace because they apparently needed my signature.
"If it is okay Miss. Davenport, I would need to speak with you in private. Is there some room where we could go?" He said. I nodded, curious to see what he had to say. We went to the kitchen and I closed the door as we sat down at the table.
"You see, Miss. Davenport, there are some rules that you should know about before coming to the palace." He laid a paper on the table and I started reading it.
1. The contestant cannot leave the on her/his own accord. She/he can only be dismissed by the prince/princess himself/herself.
Okay, that one I expected and kind of knew.
2. There is no timeline for the Selection — it can last from days to years.
Wait. Years?
3. The contestant cannot arrange her/his times with the prince/princess. If in a large social setting, this rule does not apply.
This one is fine. I don't even want to spend a lot of alone time with him anyway.
Most of the rules were completely normal, like "don't fight or sabotage" until I got to the last one.
15. If the prince/princess invites the contestant to do something with him/her, it is advised she/he shouldn't refuse — regardless if it's dinner, outings, kissing, or sexual interaction.
Wait? Did I read that one correctly? I re-read it, but the same thing still stood there. I "should not" refuse, but I can? Right?
"So I need you to sign that you have read the rules and understand them." He said.
I looked up at him, trying not to show him what went on in my head. "Uhm, sure. Where should I sign?" He pointed at the bottom of the page and I signed. He then shook my hand and left.
After he left, I could not stop thinking of that last rule. This did not make me like the prince at all. Honestly, I hated him. But if I'm going to the palace tomorrow, so I better get my beauty sleep, I thought to myself as I rolled my eyes.
