Because not everyone knows what "The Selection" series is about, I am going to give you all you need to know before reading. So this is for those who haven't read the series and for those who need a refresher.

Illéa

Illéa is the name of the country that formerly was North America.  It is now constituted of 35 different provinces, the main "capital" laying in Angeles (see map above). Illéa was established by Gregory Illéa after China took over the United States of America in the Fourth World War.

The country is an absolute monarchy, ruled by the Schreave family. But as I am not following the books, those as Maxon, Amberly, Eadelyn, etc. will not be in this novel.

I will add a link to more history for those who are interested at the end of the chapter.

The Caste System

Not much is known of how the caste system is started. Although it was hinted that people's castes were based on the amount of money their family donated to the government during the first war with New Asia.

One's:

The ones are the royal family only.

Two's:

Celebrities; including athletes, singers, actors/actresses, models, politicians, police officers, firefighters, guards, and military members.

Three's:

Businessmen including inventors, teachers, philosophers, scientists, doctors, veterinarians, nurses, dentists, architects, librarians, engineers, therapists/psychologists, film directors, music producers, lawyers, and writers. However, those girls that make it into the elite in the selection automatically become a three, if they had been lower before.

Four's:

Jewelers, real estate agents, insurance brokers, head chefs, construction managers, property/business owners, and farmers.

Five's:

Artists and Performers; including stage actors, classical musicians, singers, dancers, photographers, sculptures, and circus performers.

Six's:

Workers; including secretaries, waiters/waitresses, housekeepers, seamstresses, store clerks, cooks, and drivers. The servants at the palace are also Sixes. Liviana is a Six (obviously).

Seven's:

Manual Laborers; including gardeners, construction workers, farmhands, gutter/pool cleaners, and "trash collectors, ditch diggers, movers."

Eight's:

"Untouchables"; including mentally/physically unwell people, addicts, runaways, illegitimate, and the homeless. In a deleted scene from chapter eight of "the selection", it was written that Eights are "people who had been abandoned or orphaned with no way to prove their caste. And then people who fell into heavy drug use, the mentally and physically handicapped, they were all unemployable and left in the streets to beg."

Traitors to the crown are also in this caste. Usually, when wealthy people become eights, they are killed and left in the streets. The Eights are the lowest of the lows and people were punished by being made an Eight.

The Selection - How do it work?

Well almost like the bachelor, but with a royal prince instead. But for those who don't watch that, here is another explanation.

The Selection is a competition between thirty-five girls, called the selected, compete to marry the prince and become the Princess of Illéa.

All females that are single and ages 16–20 are sent an application to fill out and return to the State Providence Offices along with a photo of themselves. Participation isn't mandatory, so the girl does not have to fill it out if she/he so chooses not to. The government says that the girls/boys are picked randomly, but to ensure that an ugly girl isn't picked, they get their pictures taken to find the most attractive ones to compete.

There is also A LOT of rules they need to follow, but more about that later.

And that ladies and gentlemen's is pretty much what you kind of need to know. Almost all of the information was taken from the wonderful "The Selection - A fan wiki". I do recommend it, as it explains everything you need, wants, and didn't even know that you needed to know.
