CHAPTER THREE
I wake up groggily to the sound of heated whispering and my ears rinnging with that shrill sound giving me a slight headache. I blink a couple times against the harsh light atracking my eyes once they're open and turn my head to the side only to stare directly at Nanna with her hand on her hip and the other raised pointedly in my Headmaster's face.
"Nanna" I whimper and feel relieved that she is here. She drops her hands and in the blink of an eye she's standing next to me with worry etched into her face. "Oh honey are you alright?" she asks and looks all over my body to actually see if I am injured in any way. I move my arms so I can push myself up and Nanna supports me in my efforts until I'm upright "What happened?" I ask softly and see a flash of anger flicker through her eyes.
"She heard THAT beeping noise and it set her off on a major panic attack before she blacked out completely" Kyle says as he steps into the room and I detect a sense of hostility in his voice. The memory of what happened slowly returns and I flinch away as though I have been burnt and look away from Kyle knowing how mad he is at me.
He hates it when I ave panic attacks. He knows there is nothing he can do for me and I think the fact that he feels so helpless makes him angry. I know the panic attacks scare him, but there is nothing I can do too stop them once they start. "How on earth did she hear that noise?" Nanna ask and stares directly at the Headmaster.
"I was told it was one of the students who had the sound recorded on their Link and played in in the classroom." He answers gruffly and I immediately know who it was "But I assure you the student did not play it on purpose" Kyle snorts disgustedly and rolls his eyes in disbelief at the Headmaster's comment.
"Do you have anything to say Delta XT-Six?" He asks, addressing Kyle by his programmed name. Kyle straightens up and places his hands behind his back without saying a word and the Headmaster nods his head "I thought so." I swing my legs over the side of the hospital-like bed and slowly stand up squaring my shoulders and facing the Headmaster head on.
"I know that the student you are talking about indedd did it on purpose, sir" I say without my voice shaking and mentally congratulate myself. The Headmaster is a very intimidating man. "How do you know for sure Delta BQ-Twelve?" I feel Nanna's gaze on me, but refuse to look at her "Delta QR-Nine has always picked on me and I guarantee you he played that sound on purpose once I was close enough to hear."
Kyle relaxes his posture and clears his throat. "The whole Lab Sector Four laughed afterwords, sir. No one even made a move to see if she was alright and if it wasn't for me she would have fallen face firts into the ground." I shoot Kyle a grateful smile nd he simply nods his head in welcome.
"I will investigate further and this will be dealt with accordingly." With that he spins on his heels and leaves the room. Aunt Hanna draws me into a deathly hug and kisses me on both cheeks before letting me go "Let's go home" she walks toward the door and I stay on my spot.
"I still have class Nanna..." Kyle shakes his head and holds out his hand for me "School came out an hour ago, you have extra class tomorrow though to catch up on what you missed after firts block." I nod in understanding and groan silently to myself. I wish I didn't pass out, now I need to stay longer after school tomorrow.
The moment we arrive home Kyle insists that I get examined by our House JM-Link which is of course a robot doctor and once I am cleared Aunt Hanna sets off to make us lunch. In our small two story house, books are scattered everywhere and it is nearly impossible to get around without knocking a pile over or stepping on one of the many that have already fallen.
Aunt Hanna is obsessed with reading and not the novels or sci-fi type books, only the educational books. Those are the ones that keep her up till the late morning hours and she always shares everything she learns with us. She teaches us the things the school would never allow since books are banned ever since the war ended.
All libraries were shut down and only the highly respected or ranked people were allowed to have access to these books. Aunt Hanna gets her books off the black market and hides them every time we get our annual visit from the Guard. She is absolutely in love with knowledge and she never wants to stop learning new things, her knowledge empowers us and yet at the same time endangers us as well.
Every student is assigned a certain set of programs to learn and it is embedded in their DNA. Once a course is completed the student has the option to upgrade or be let int society to work. As a Delta-Twelve I have completed almost every upgrade available fr student and once I decide to finish my upgrades I will be placed among the Guard. I don't want that.
They are responsible for the death of my mother. Once you become a member of the Guard you gain supernatural abilities...or so they make you think and thus explaining how the knife appeared in the man's hand right before he slit my mother's throat. My hatred for them is enough to not complete my upgrades even though it is seen as the highest honour anyone can ever achieve.
"Food is ready!" Nanna yells and the thought of my mother lingers in my mind as I head to the kitchen stepping over a few piles of books on the way. Kyle looks at me curiously and I keep avoiding his gaze, I know he wants to talk but that will have to wait for later. We all eat our sandwiches in silence and Kyle, as always, is the first to finish.
As I am about to head up to our room Kyle stops me at the bottom of the stairs "Don't you feel different?" he asks me out of the blue and I look at him clearly confused. "What do you mean?" He pulls me down to sit on the bottom step ad squeezes in next to me "With everything that happened today, you don't seem to be running off to the roof like you usually would."
I shrug my shoulders not knowing how to reply. I just honestly don't feel like running away anymore. "Don't just shrug at me Kim, talk to me." his voice is pleading and I sigh "You're my best friend Kim and you seem very out of sorts today." I know he wants me to open up, but I really don't know what to say to him. So I go for what I experienced today.
"Today's panic attack was one of the worst yet." I whisper and Kyle takes my hand in his in a sign of comfort and urges me to go on. "My mother's screams were so real Kyle, it was as though I was right back there all over again and I just couldn't do anything tosave her." a sudden burts of anger propels me up from the stair and I begin pacing up and down,
"I know I was young and not capable of attacking anyone, but I feel like I could have at least screamed or maybe untied my mother. I just stood there and did nothing!" I kick a pile of books out of frustration and immediately feel regret and bend down to pick them up.
"I couldn't even help my father Kyle..." I whisper still crouched in front of the pile of books. "There was nothing you could have done Kimberley, the Guard are ruthless people and would have taken you away, or worse maybe even killed you. You would have never have met us and I am not saying what happened to your parents was a good thing, it was tragic Kim, but your parents did what they did to protect you. You are special Sweetheart, can you not see that?" Aunt Hanna pulls me into a hug and holds me tight as unwanted tears stream down my face.
"In time you will come to know just how special you are" she whispers and kisses my cheek softly before letting me go and walks away. "I could not have said it better myself" Kyle remarks and I wipe away the tears "let's go for a run" he suggests and the next moment we are heading out the door in our jogging attire and running shoes tied.
