CHAPTER TWO
A noise from behind me draws my attention away from the city before me at my feet. I turn around and look at the ledge where the ladder is and call out to Kyle "I know you're there!" I turn my gaze back on the city and sigh softly once i hear him climb fully onto the roof and wal towards me.
He silently sits down next to me with his legs over the ledge as mine and pulls me to his side with his arm wrapped around my waist. The city light look so far away fro up here and I think back to the time I came here to end it all. I was about thirteen years old and in the darkest place anyone could imagine. I had no will to live anymore.
That was the day Kyle and I had our biggest fight and it felt to me like everything in the world was against e. I felt unwanted and hated, I even began hating myself, so I came up here to just put an end to all my suffering. I stood on the ledge and waited for a moment, drinking in the cool air and soft lights of the city. Trying to embed it all to memory my last moments, not that it really mattered.
I remember everything from that night, the way Kyle just silently came up behind me and took my hand in his, the way he begged me with his eyes to step down from the ledge, I never felt so weak in my whole life. The way he drew me into his arms once I stepped down and just held me while I cried for what felt like an eternity. He just held me and did not even mutter a word.
I look up at Kyle and I see his jaw clenching and unclenching as he tries to stop his tears from falling. "It will never make you less of a man if you cry Kyle" I mumble to him and he simply tightens his arm around me as he finally lets the tears fall. "I am just remembering the night four years ago when I found your note taped to our bedrooom door..." he stares out in front of him as though he is reliving the moment and I know which night he is talking about.
"I was so afraid I would lose you Kim...at first I had no idea where to find you and then it just came to me. I knew you needed me more than ever and I just followed my instincts and it led me right to this very roof." He slowly takes in a shuddering breath and lets it out slowly "I was just thinking of the exact same night, I remember how you just held me and stroked my back so soothingly and everything around me just melted away..."
"Never do that to me gain Kim, I won't bare it if I were to lose you. You and Nanna are all that I have left in this world." His voice is soft and he kisses the top of my head once I rest it against his shoulder.
The sun slowly begins to peak its head out of the horizon and that is our cue to leave. We sleepily stand up and head back home. We ritually go through our morning routine which includes a shower, getting dressed in our uniforms, having breakfast, brushing teeth and doing our morning meditation. With a lunch bag shoved into our hands and a kiss from Aunt Hanna (Nanna) we walk the three blocks past the cemetery and into the facility known as 'school'.
The immaculate walls and sparkling floors of the facility has this tendency to make a person feel a little uncomfortable. "I will see you at Lab Sector Four" Kyle hugs me and makes his way to his first Lab which is Lab Sector Two. I on the other hand head all the way down the hallway to Lab Sector Eight and a I walk by I hear all the kids whisper and see some of the even staring at me, but like Kyle always says "Don't pay them any attenyion, they are not worth your precious time." I hold my head up high and walk into my Lab just in time
The door firmly shuts and locks behind me and I immediately settle down at my desk. The od thing about our 'school' is that we do not use books. all our information is give to us in class and we never receive homework, all we need to do is pass our exams as best as we can and attend extra curricula acctivities after school in order to upgrade.
By upgrade I do not mean moving up to the next grade, we don't have grades. When kids upgrade they have certain skills, most kids do not upgrade past level 8, and those who reach the highest upgrade that can be awarded, 14, are placed among the Guard of our Domain, but more of that later.
Our Professor taps twice on his desk and the classroom falls silent. The projector switches on and images begin flickering over the screen of our history and such and almost immediately I zone out.
My thoughts travel to the projector and how the particals within it sustains it and I imagine all of them beginning to vibrate and all of a sudden the projector bursts into flames. Collective gasps and screams ring out throughout the room and studenst jump out from their seats to get away from the flame. I on the other hand sit and stare amazed at what just happened.
We all ar escoted out into the hallway and a couple minutes later we are seated again and a new pojector sits in place of the old one. That was an odd coincidence...
Class continues with little to no teaching from our professor and soon enough we are let out by the shrill bell and I am the first out. I head directly to Kyle's Sector and once I see him I begin to sprint and suddenly jump on his back excitedly. People stare at us oddly and I simply throw my arms over his shoulders and wrap my legs tight around his hips.
"Why are you so excited?" Kyle asks with a smirk and I roll my eyes at him "The craziest thing happened in our Sector just now" I announce and jump off his back only to land squarely on my feet. "Our projector in our classroom spontaneously combusted." Kle takes my hand in his and we walk to Lab Sector Four together with me smiling prooudly for some odd reason.
"Did you do that partical thing you did when we were at the shop the other day?" he asks and my smile immediately drops "I am telling you, that wasn't me...it's not possible." before Kyle can say anything else we reach out Sector and a beeping sound catches me off guard.
My blood runs cold as memories of my mother's screaming fills my ears and my whole body begins to tremble. My limbs want to move, react or do something, but I find myself frozen in place. By the time my memories reach the part where my father drags me away and images of my mother's slit throat fill my mind, my knees buckle under me and give way.
Just before I black out laughter seeps into my ears, not the nice kind, the cruel kind and tears stain my pale cheeks.
Hi guys, so chapter two is up, please let me know what you think!
Lots of love Anna!
