CHAPTER FOUR
We take our time running down past the cemetery and head straight towards Harold’s place. I slow down to a slight jog once we reach his shop and Kyle keeps up with me. The bell above the door chimes as we step inside the little antique shop and the first thing I notice is the silence. It’s too quiet…
Kyle nods his head to the right side of the shop for me to go and he takes the left. I slowly maneuver myself around the shelves looking for any signs of Harold or at least a customer, but I find nothing. I walk back up to the front desk and a creek above me draws my attention. As I look up Harold jumps down on top of me with a warrior scream and topple me to the ground.
His hand is around my neck in an instant and he menacingly demands my name. He takes a second before he is of me and helping me up to my feet “Sorry Kim, I did not recognize you with your black hair.” He apologizes and I gently feel my neck and try to soothe the throbbing pain he left behind after his sudden attack.
Kyle comes marching up to us clearly angry and I hold up my hand for him to slow down “Why on earth would you jump someone like that?” Kyle demands and I turn my eyes back on Harold who is ashamedly looking down at his feet, his dark hair hanging in his face and broad shoulders slack. “I thought it was someone else.” He mumbles and that alone draws my interest.
“Anyway…” Harold trails off and I see Kyle visibly reloax once he notices I’m not seriously injured. “What are you two crazy kids doing here anyhow?” we shrug our shoulders. We don’t really have a reason for being here. We just sometimes like some other company than Aunt Hanna. “I get it…you two want to know more about the Guard don’t you?” I look over at Kyle and he silently nods his head. I guess that is what we subconsciously came here for then.
“Follow me” Harold walks around his desk and to his small storage room at the back. Kyle and I silently follow not really sure where he is heading off to. The storage room is a little cramped and just as I am about to voice my thoughts Harold walks straight through the back wall without so much as blinking. I stare open mouthed at the wall and so does Kyle.
Harold’s head reappears out of the wall with a goofy grin on his face “Come one then” and disappears once again. I look at Kyle for some sort of advice or guidance but all he does is gesture for me to go first. “Why do I have to go first?” he laughs and shakes his head “Ladies always go first.” I roll my eyes and step closer to the wall “You’re just a chicken” I mutter and step through.
I am stuck speechless at the sight before me and I hear Kyle gasp behind e after he steps through “Holy sh-“ I hold up my hand cutting him off “Don’t curse” he mumbles an apology and Harold just looks at us with excitement gleaming in his blue eyes. “How long has this been here?” Harold puffs out his chest with pride and answers “For twenty-nine-years”.
I look around the warehouse-like space before me filled with shelves upon shelves of electronics and many different technologies and equipment ranging back from years before the war. “How do you manage to keep this so well hidden?” Kyle asks and I nod in agreement to his question. “In case you forgot, there I a wall hiding all of this and only I know how to unlock the door.” That makes sense, now I feel completely idiotic for not knowing the answer before agreeing with the question.
