"Can I have a caramel frap?" I place my order to the girl behind the counter, her typing in some numbers into the machine. "Of course! That'll be 4.99." She tells me as I dig through my wallet, trying to find the five I had earlier.
To my disappointment, it's nowhere to be found, so I decide to break a ten. "Here you go." She hands me my drink, filled to the brim with pure bliss.
I had come to our local café to meet up with my friend, Kristen, to catch up about how our summer went. It wasn't a big café, it was about the size of a store in a mall or something, but what it made was excellent.
They always stayed open 24/7, which was awesome for me since I often sneak out at night and wander the streets. It had a small stage, like seriously small, in the corner where 'poets' would come recite their depressing stories on Friday afternoons, and it had a fair amount of seating.
Most people just got their drink to go, so that wasn't an issue for the company, so they just had about ten tables lining a mirror wall. It was quite cozy, and it was almost like my second home.
"Shay! Over here!" Kristen calls me from across the café, my eyes meeting an empty table in the back of the restaurant. I give her a small smile and make my way through the crowd and over to where she is sat. "Hey girly!" She squeals as she gives we exchange a small hug.
For someone so small, she gives very nice hugs.
"How was your last week of summer?" She asks, sitting down at the small round table. Her hands are crossed under her chin as she gives me puppy eyes. "Ugh. Don't bring it up." I groan, thinking of the past week.
It wasn't bad at all, which was the problem. Usually, I love to go back to school, getting to see my friends again, and learning new things, but this summer was different. I actually didn't want the summer to end this year round. Everything about this summer was perfect, from getting a perfect tan, to going to the lake every week. Sadly, my senior year was starting tomorrow, which means more homework and responsibilities.
Kristen gives a small laugh to my response, her eyes crinkling as she chuckles. "Well, this year should be better. There's going to be twice as many students to befriend this year." I widen my eyes at the newly given information, her going from laughing to serious in less than a second.
"Why?"
"You know Northridge?" I nod, staying silent. "Well, they had a fire, entire top floor was completely ruined. Now the students from there are coming here until their school is fixed." I groan out loud, sending her back into her giggling faze.
Northridge kids were dangerous. Like, seriously not okay. That's why it doesn't surprise me one bit that the school was burned down, that's something that's normal for them.
The entire school was put on lock down one time because a bunch of kids brought their handguns to school one day, and being the oblivious teachers they are, they couldn't figure out who had them and who didn't.
Don't even get me started on how many fights they go through either. Literally every single week, there's a new fight, and a new injury to hear and talk about.
It was an understatement to say that I was dreading this year already.
"Don't worry, it's just for the one year. Then we're off to college!" She squeals the last part, as I nod along to her excitement. "Yeah, I'm not that excited about that part." I say, making her give me a sad look and make a 'sniffing' noise.
"We'll still talk and stuff. And we will definitely visit each other on holidays!" I laugh as she explains what our Christmas will be like when we have our touching reunion.
I was sad because Kris was going to Julliard, a school for gifted dancers like herself, which was in New York. And I, well I was going to Texas state, where I hope to become a successful Lawyer.
It was also a bummer because Kristen was like my other half, and we've always grown up together. From Pre-K to now, we've always been close, almost too close as almost everyone in Durnian High thought we were lesbians last year, some may still think so.
"Hey, are you listening?" I snap out of my thoughts and meet her gaze once again. "No, you ramble too much." She rolls her eyes and points to my cup. "I think you're out of coffee Shayne." I look into my cup and sure enough, there's just a thin layer of foam at the bottom.
That was fast.
"Okay, I'm gonna get some more, you want anything?" She puts one hand on her chin and looks deep in thought as I hear the bell ring to the door, signaling more people coming into the small place almost at midnight. "Forget it, I'll get back up if you figure it out." She laughs and sits back in her chair as I start to walk over to the counter.
Right as I'm about to go to the counter, I hear someone call out behind me. "Hey, you." I turn around at the voice who rudely called me out, almost dropping my cup as I turn around so fast.
Behind me is a very tall, rather attractive man, looking my age or so. Maybe a little older, but he definitely isn't nice as he doesn't give any expression to me. He has dark brown hair, slightly curly, and is holding an empty cup in his hand.
He has a black beanie on which covers most of his hair, and is wearing a brown loose long sleeve shirt. He has tattoos peeking out from the top of his shirt with a very noticeable eyebrow and lip ring.
He's surrounded by four guys, all looking completely diverse, but with the same amount of tattoos and piercings as the next. It almost scares me as I look at the man who called me.
"Get me a mocha..." His British accents becomes clear as I furrow my brow at him. He rolls his eyes and makes a grunting noise, throwing his head back before saying quite rudely, "Okay, fine... Please?" I'm irritated as he stares at me with bright green eyes.
"E-Excuse me?" I ask, him laughing crudely with his friends. "What?! You don't work here sweetheart? I couldn't sworn you would've with that hair and clothes. You look like a nun who met the modern world."
I make a disgusted face as he talks, looking down to my outfit. I was wearing simple blue jeans with my favorite sweater, I don't see why it was like a 'nun who met the modern world.'
He laughs with his friends as they turn around and walk off, leaving me speechless with an empty cup.
