“Be my girlfriend.”

I almost choke as I cough at the awkwardness of the moment. I can’t help but laugh, feeling nervous and  slightly creeped out.

He couldn’t be serious, right?!

I look to Harry, “What the hell?!” I ask/yell, Harry shooting me a murderous glare. “Not for real! Just pretend to date me to make James realize what he’s been missing out on, make him want you.” I stop laughing as I realize what he’s trying to tell me.

I ponder over the thought for a full minute before shaking my head. “I-I don’t think so…I have a rep here you know.” Harry almost chokes on his own laughter as I say that, making me glare at him. “A ‘rep?’ Wow, you are really…” He shakes his head and trails off, leaving me a little pissed off.

I decide to leave the stairwell and get to class, hoping that Mr. Walker won’t give us a tardy from the repeated actions of yesterday.

“Hey!” I hear Harry call behind me as I walk through the doors to the upper floor of Durnian. I ignore Harry and keep walking, passing a few students with hall passes.

I’m going to get killed by Mr. Walker.

Nerves flood through me as I walk briskly down the hallway, hearing Harry behind me mumble to himself as he keeps up.

I turn a hallway to my first class and freeze at the sight in front of me.

James is walking out of my class.

My heart rate accelerates as I look at the newly-taken boy turn to me. I feel my chest start aching and tears start to rise in my eyes as I watch him look up to me.

He grins widely, as if he’s relieved, and waves. I can’t help but smile and wave back, too much in the habit of doing it.

It’s not like he’s dead to you now…

I remind myself, but it’s not working. I can’t help but feel like if I don’t get over him now, I will waste away my Senior year over him and then going to college sad because I still love him and blah, blah, blah.

I see him walk over to me with happy steps, probably still thinking about his new girlfriend I already don’t like…

I ignore the nasty thoughts I have acquired from him and force a smile as he approaches me. “Shay! I’m so glad I found you! I thought you were absent today!” I give him a confused look as I hear Harry’s boots stop behind me.

“I looked up your schedule to see if you were here, by the way, your teacher is pissed.” He raises his eyebrows at me and then turns his attention, failing to explain why Mr. Walker was pissed.

“Hey…Harry, was it?” James asks, throwing his sweet voice into my ears. Stop it! It’s not a sweet voice anymore. It’s James’ voice.
