Ashy Pain in my Ass

War paused at my statement, processing it, digesting the meaning.

"I will not harm any of you, and if they find a way to make me, kill me."

I looked at him and then continued down the open hall, I really didn't want to think about it anymore. It's depressing that I might have been created to kill my mate and his remaining brethren.

The pathway wrapped around and into the rock, forcing us down into it's underbelly. I had left him standing there thinking about that, but I don't trust that the council did it for my sake, or humanities sake. I was so lost in thought that when the ground started shaking I just passed it off as an Ashworm. All the air exited my lungs as I was tackled from behind. I wiggled free and when I saw it was War I relaxed and gasped like a fish. I rolled onto my back and saw War standing over me. 

He kneeled next to me and pulled me into a sitting position and rubbed my back gently. I finally sucked air in and I took a few deep breaths, I turned and looked at where we came from. There were rocks covering where we came in, I saw the scuff marks in the ash from where War tackled me.

"Thank you." I breathed. I was shocked that I didn't realize what it was when it was happening.

"Please, be careful." War raised my chin to look me in the eyes.

"I was lost in thought.."

"I know. I heard your thoughts. Don't worry, they'll have a hard time trying to tell you to do anything you don't want to."

I laughed and rolled away from War so that I could stand up, once I was up I hauled him to his feet. As we went down the hallway we came across a few small flying demons. I used Cieri to shoot a few of them down while War shot the others down. After they were dead we followed the rest of the pathway and it led to an ashy area with some platforms. An Ashworm lurked in the ash and circled the area. I hesitantly toed the ash and within a few seconds the worm was there, investigating. I shuddered, these things were gross.

I turned to War, but he held his hands up. I blinked at him with confusion, but he just watched the worm. Suddenly he shot forward and started trudging through the ash which was up to his thighs. He reached the first platform just as the worm brushed between his platform and me. He must be testing it's senses and it's speed, looking for any weaknesses. With just a flap of my wings I joined him on the platform.

He was watching the worm and when it was on the other side of the area War took off again. Once again he just barely made it to the next platform, I joined him in a matter of seconds and then immediately took off to the next platform. I tucked my wings in and waited for War. This one would be harder, it was middle ground, equal distance from both ends of the area. 

He took off and the worm sped up, he was about halfway when the worm rounded the corner. I shot forward and scooped him up just as the worm burst from the ground. I spun to the side and twisted around, I dodged the platforms and then landed at the other side of the platforms. Solid ground, I kept a hand on his chest and glared back at the worm. I pushed War away and looked at him to make sure he was all good.

I sighed in relief and huffed at him, "You tell me to be careful and then you almost turn into worm food!"

I took a deep breath, "Sorry."

He nodded and kissed me gently. " I didn't mind you saving me, not with where my face ended up."

I thought about it, and sure enough I realized that his face had been in my chest. I elbowed him and giggled a bit, dirty old man. As I looked ahead I noticed a chest as well as a way forward. We got into the next hall and the door between us an the worm raised up, closing us off.
