As we stepped outside into the Scalding Gallows the first thing I noticed was the island in the middle of the area. That must be Samael's prison. We started forward and some angels showed up. War drew Chaoseater and lunged forward, I watched as he cut all of them down in seconds.
He sheathed Chaoseater. "A lot of help you were"
I curled my lips up into a small, smug smile. "I try."
He shook his head and I swore I saw his lips twitch. We walked to the prison and we were stopped by a demon general.
It spoke in the demon language "You have killed many of my warriors."
War replied in the demon language "I have yet to find a warrior among you" I raised my eyebrows and struggled not to laugh. It didn't work.
"Hey Ugly, why don't you go put some water on that burn?" I snickered. Surprisingly it just shook its head and chuckled.
The demon continued in English "Do you know what is imprisoned here? There are things that even YOU should fear, Horseman!" He briefly pointed his axe at us. "Once you were strong. But now you are weak. And you might as well be alone. The Destroyer knows of your coming. Even now, he moves his legions against you!"
War pulled Chaoseater of his back "Then I'll make this quick."
The demon roared at this and summoned some minions.
I pulled Solis and Luna off my back "If you take care of him I will keep the little ones off of you"
He nodded and we set to work, I let myself become a whirlwind of death. My blades flashed in the sunlight even as blood covered them. I heard something heavy hit the ground and I did a fast maneuver to see what it was. It was the general, I focused on the four remaining demons. I lunged forward twisting and turning my blades, after I was done with them they looked like ribbons. I turned to War and then I looked around, and the gargoyles caught my eyes. One was puking blood, the others were not. I pointed it out to War and he walked over to one and pulled it forward. After it was in position blood came rushing out and it filled the marks on the ground. He did that with the next one and this time the ground opened into a demon portal.
"War! Are you here to play executioner?" Samael heaved himself out of the portal and threw his wings out. He was huge, like a shit ton taller than War and more built. And angry.
"They should have sent all four of you."
"I have no interest in killing you, Samael." War sounded calm which is a good thing.
Samael knew what he meant instantly "Ha! The Destroyer? He's beyond your reach. Beyond mine."
War frowned and I stepped to the side of him to watch both of them talk. Ha I'm standing over here so I can see Wars fangs as he talks.
"Has prison made you a coward?" Oh, oh no he did not! I cut a glare to War clearly letting him know that I want to walk away from this.
Samael roared in his face but War barely flinched, even as Samael literally spit fire.
I stood still as Samael leaned back and began to speak again "Perhaps there is a way... But, you will need to get inside the Destroyers spire. The Tower is guarded by four of his Chosen. Bring me their hearts! And ask me no questions... My reasons for helping you are my own."
I turned to Samael fully and he barely glanced at me. He doesn't see me as a threat, wrong move on his part...
"Where can I find these 'Guardians'?"
Samael straightened up "First, seek the Twilight Cathedral where the Bat Queen Tiamat has gone to roost. The whole of her domain is a blistered inferno. By land you will never reach it. Find the high ground... with this."
I watched as War was lifted off of the ground and a pair of shadow wings formed behind him. I felt jealousy rise but I pushed it down the best I could.
Samael continued "And bring me her still-beating heart!"
War landed gently and I turned to go.
"Wait, little one, you did not think I would forget you?"
I turned to look at Samael maybe a little bit too hopeful. Once he had my attention he continued "You already have wings, you must awaken them and the part of your spirit that comes with them. You have the muscle formations for them, this I noticed in your movements."
I have wings! I have dreamt of this day for over a century! I tried calming my over-excited heart.
"How do I 'awaken' them?"
"How did a baby bird learn to fly?"
"By being shoved out of the nest... I need to jump off of something high?"
"No" Wait what? "You need to experience the fear."
He reached out and grabbed me and before I could struggle or say anything he promptly threw me over the edge. I screamed in terror as I plummeted to to the lava below. My hair was whipping me in the face but I didn't care. I pulled my arms in and twisted my upper half and then my legs followed the movement. I was now facing the lava and I kept screaming but an extreme pain over took me, abruptly stopping my screaming. My back.... I felt my muscles spasming and readjusting, my armor shifted a little bit. I screwed my eyes shut as I heard a sickening sound and I screamed again, this time a mix of terror and pain. The raw and primal scream came from my core and echoed up the canyon. The pain stopped but I was still falling and extremely sore, but it was fading already. I opened my eyes and saw the lava only 10 or 15 feet away, I gave a small shout and reared back extending my wings. Within seconds I was gliding, my wings I...
I felt some tears roll down my face, this felt so natural so right. I flapped them gently, keeping a steady altitude. I gave a real smile and pulled my wings up and slammed them down. I turned so I was facing up and poured speed into my flaps. I shot upwards like a shooting star, passing the platform I gave a whoop. I twisted and turned through the air, testing my agility. The wind whistled in my ears, through my hair. I leveled out and put on some speed gliding above the road next to where we entered. I folded my wings in above the pit and dove into it. The wind whipped past me making me feel... alive really. That's the only way to explain this. I pulled up and flapped to gain altitude, I passed the platform and kept going. I stopped only when I could easily see the curvature of the world and it took my breath away. The world had been ravaged and yet it was still beautiful to look at. I stopped flapping and let myself fall, aiming myself downwards. I was falling at an almost alarming speed. I saw Samael and War, they were both watching me. I opened my wings, violently, to the their full length. I back flapped powerfully so that I wouldn't land to hard. I put my feet out and I landed heavily on Samael's shoulder, I flared my wings for balance as he turned his head to me.
I squatted and looked him in the eye "Thank you. I know demons don't do sappy and shit so I'll make it short and sweet. I have wanted my own wings since I was 11 years old. Now I do, all because you knew they were there."
He seemed a bit speechless so I patted his collarbone and hopped down. I landed gracefully next to War and I gave him a nod.
"I'm ready when you are"
He turned and started walking as Samael sunk into his portal. I was practically skipping next to War.
"Since you were 11... how?"
"Hmmm well.. it's hard to explain." I stopped walking and stared into the distance. "Well ok so it felt like a phantom limb or a limb that wasn't there anymore. An amputee would 'feel' pain in the limb that was removed, they called it 'phantom limb'. It felt exactly like that too... Well one day I was running outside, this was before we moved to New York City- the city we first met in. I was running and I got this feeling like... I could feel wings bobbing behind me. I felt like if I just leapt up into the air, I would fly. I had that feeling all of the time, it was like an ache or an itch. Sometimes it was so real and then reality would come crashing down on me. At that time I told myself that it would obviously never happen. I had hated myself for being human... Sometimes I would get the feeling while walking or sitting and it would feel like a pressure was there- where they now attach too." I trailed off. "We should continue"
He looked deep in thought and I took the chance to look at my wings. They were everything I wanted. They were a mix between white and silver, not quite one or the other. I'd estimate my wingspan at 20 feet, that means each wing is roughly 10 feet long. There were 3 major layers of feathers, the feathers on the end were staggered. Most were decent length and then every 3 or so feathers, a longer, bigger feather stuck out.
I saw that War was a little ways ahead of me, I pulled my wings up tight to my back and started jogging to catch up. Once we got off of the bridge to the prison we turned to the left. After a few minutes of walking we came across a small(ish) gap... and three Wicked. I took to the air and gained altitude until I was above them. I drew both of my blades and dove towards them, as I neared one I completely folded my wings and tucked them away. I landed on it positioned my swords along my forearms. As it slammed onto the ground I severed its arms and then its head. I stood up and turned to see War clinging to the leg of one. I raised an eyebrow but lunged at the next one. I leapt up into the air and followed it as it ran off a ways. I came at it from the side and I cut one of its arms off and I kicked it, sending it to the lava below. As I hovered there I flicked the blood off of Solis and Luna, I landed next to War and sheathed them. I walked to the gap and studied the blue geyser, it looked like it would propel him. I watched as War lept off the edge and used shadowflight, as he passed over the geyser it pushed him upwards by forcing the wings to flap. Once he was on the other side he turned to watch me cross.
What would happen if I passed over it? I guess we will find out.
I jumped and glided over to the geyser but it did nothing for me. It must only react to shadowflight.
I flapped once to make it to the ledge, I left my wings out because there was another gap ahead. Once I landed I spotted a few Wicked and a flaming yellow demon, a Fleshbuster, I think. We took out the Wicked easily and War started on the Fleshbuster. I joined in slicing along its legs until finally it stopped attacking and it roared to the sky. I backed away and sheathed my weapons. War can handle it from here. Suddenly it exploded, War just fell back a few feet but the force of it threw me off the edge... after I bounced twice. I gritted my teeth against the pain and twisted to right myself. Once I did I opened my wings and made my way back to War. I landed and put my hands on my head while panting. I groaned and dropped my hands, I turned and looked at where it had exploded. The ground was black and full of ash and soot. War was looking me over... I could feel myself starting to blush. He's just looking for wounds, good thing nobody can ever tell if I'm blushing. Now if I can keep the stupid smile off my face... I managed to keep my poker face on as he finished checking... me out. He nodded at me seemingly satisfied that I wasn't hurt. I took to the air and lazily glided to the ledge, I could practically hear War's glare. I gave a small smile to the wall then I let it drop. I turned to watch War use the geyser. The tunnel lead to a cavern and I found a chest to the right down on a small island. I glided down and opened the chest by pushing really hard on the skull, I let the souls go to War. I flew back up and we continued to a cliff, I flew up to the top and waited for War to get there.
He landed right next to me "Took you long enough."
"Shut up." I laughed and followed him.
I saw the demonic growth and flew to where it ended, once I landed two Minions attacked, they walked on two legs upfront and they ended in a tail. I had Solis and Luna drawn in seconds, the first Minion jumped and came spinning down onto me. Holding Luna and Solis in an 'X' I shoved it back and into the lava below. The next one came at me from the side and I cut at it until it could barely move. Before I could move to behead it War slammed Chaoseater down and took its head off.
Growling he turned to me. "You should have waited for me."
I raised an eyebrow "War, I can take care of myself."
It was his turn to raise an eyebrow. I huffed and flicked off the blood off Luna and Solis and sheathed them.
"That was one time and that was not my fault." I crossed my arms. "Besides I have been killing these bastards since the day you gave me Hubris."
"Where is your sister?"
I dropped my arms and let my gaze go steely. "They took her, I don't know if she is dead or alive, but I won't stop looking for signs of her."
He nodded and I jumped and glided to the next ledge, he was right behind me. We walked up the path and I saw two geysers for War. He leapt forward and used shadowflight, as he did that I opened my wings and took off. While gliding next to him I saw the climbing rails so I just winged my way up there. I hovered there as I waited for War to pull himself up, as soon as he walked forward I gently put myself down next to him. We walked through the small tunnel and into the Choking Grounds. We walked towards the Vulgrim location, I heard a moan and then a small roar off to my right. I turned to see something dig itself out of a grave, it stood up and I saw that it had a sword. I looked at War out of the corner of my eye, I saw him draw Chaoseater. I pulled Solis out and walked towards the... thing. War shot forward and started battling it, just before he killed it two more showed up. I drew Solid and lunged straight at the one but it turned and shoved me to the ground. Shit! I sat up and then flapped my wings once flipping to my feet. I brought my sword down onto it, but it blocked it. I jumped back, using my wings to go faster.
They are a lot smarter than the Wicked and any zombie I've seen on TV.
I let it come at me, I blocked everything and when our blades locked in an 'X' I pulled Hubris out and slammed it up through its head. It turned to ash around the blade and for once I didn't have to clean blood off of it. Leaving the blade in as it disintegrated took the blood with... Is it because it's still touching the demon? Undead that's what it is, not dead not alive but certainly smart enough to be.
I saw War finish one off and go for a third demon I hadn't seen. Sheathing Solis I snuck up behind the thing and after War acknowledged me I jumped on it and slammed Hubris into it's ear. I let it disintegrate and opened my wings, I let myself hang there for a second before I stretched my legs out. I touched down and pulled them in tight against me. I looked around, we had destroyed all the headstones in sight. I whipped around and held out Hubris as I heard something. I relaxed once I saw that it was a green chest but this one had a black mist around it. As War opened the chest, I wandered towards the huge stone coffins and saw that one had a handle on it.
"War! Come here I found something!"
He sauntered over, clearly not happy with being 'summoned'. I gestured to the handle and he grabbed it and pulled. It started moving... easily. Holy shit he is strong!
It revealed stairs and I walked over to them, I was about to take a step forward when War decided that I was worthy to hear his voice.
"I want you to stay here."
I frowned and cocked my head at him, apparently I didn't need to ask, out loud, why.
"I don't want you getting in my way. I don't need another obstacle."
I raised my eyebrows oh really now? I feel... hurt but I won't let him know. "If I'm such a burden then you will have to learn to work around it." I looked him straight in the eyes with my best bored face. "I'm only with you because of the Council, I'm stuck with you just as much as that damn Watcher. Don't presume I'm here just to bug you, it could be worse ya know, at least I can fight hmmm? I will go talk to Vulgrim and you can go into the dirty wet hole and be an asshole by yourself."
I turned away and flung myself into the air. I gained altitude quickly and glided in slow, lazy circles. Wow great job showing that you don't care Rose! God damn it I'm so stupid. I've been put down too much, I can't just lay down and take a beating. Not anymore anyways. Am I really that useless? I can fight, is it because I am naive?
******** Wars POV *********
She seemed... upset. I just don't want her to get hurt. I was pulled from my thoughts by the Watcher.
"So instead of saying you didn't want to hurt her if you had to fight down there, you told her she is a burden. Brilliant."
I growled at it "Shut up."
It shrugged and disappeared into my gauntlet, giving me an itchy feeling. I breathed heavily out my nose and continued forward. I couldn't stop hearing the last few words she said, she has a... peculiar vocabulary. She could probably talk circles around me.
I'm sorry for not updating I had a writers block. 😣 I will try to update more often this story is something that I just kinda thought of before bed one night. I have the plot line all figured out. If you have any tips, corrections, or questions feel free to comment!
