I wake up to the sound of "Silver Bells" playing in the kitchen. I sit up from my bed and put on my fuzzy slippers and Hello Kitty robe. Don't judge. I make myself down to the kitchen and see everyone scrambling around. Grandpa and dad are talking about politics, the Patsy's are hungover, and Mrs. Mae and her family are here. Grandma and mom are fixing up breakfast while jamming out to Christmas music.
I sit at the bar and grab a plate of eggs and bacon. Grandma asks if I would like some coffee or tea and I ask for coffee with extra vanilla raspberry creamer.
She smiles at me and heads over to the coffee pot. Meanwhile, that goose head Benjamin makes his way over to me. I roll my eyes. "Good morning sunshine." He smirks. I roll my eyes once again and grandma brings over my cup of coffee. I nonchalantly just begin to sip it.
"Okay, if you ain't gonna talk I'll talk to ya." He says. "My jaw isn't wired shut Benjamin . What do you want?" I ask annoyed.
" I wanna go for a horse ride today on Ole Angel."
"So? Go ahead."
"I want you to come with me. Ya see every Christmas my dad or mama takes me to this beautiful mountain and we have a small picnic. They are both busy today and your mama said you would fill in."
"Mama!" I scream at her.
"Yes Jessie! Benjamin can't go alone and someone needs to tag along because we are all busy today and your the only one who isn't!" She says firmly but with her southern belle twang.
I sigh. "Fine. But only a little while."
Benjamin smiles and walks away.
"I'll ride Pac-man."
I finish up my breakfast and make my way up stairs to get dressed for this jerk of a horse ride. Can't believe my mama would do this to me. Who the hay does she think she is?
I roll my eyes and put on my dark blue jeans, a festive Christmas sweater, and my brown suede cowgirl boots.
I walk out to the barn to find Benjamin out there getting the horses ready.
"Well... ready?"
He smiles and nods.
I climb on top of pac-man while Benjamin gets settled on his horse.
We make our ways out and up the mountain.
As we make our way Benjamin asks me a weird question. "So does your boyfriend miss you?"
I give him a weird eye," I don't have one." I still yet blush. This is going pretty good I enjoy the scenery and Benjamin just looks like a Prince Charming on that horse.
"Really? What about that Ricky guy?"
"He dumped me last Halloween. He found another girl that was interested in the same things he was. Their really happy together."
"Oh, I'm so sorry Jessie. Well he's foolish."
"Really?"
"Totally the guy doesn't know what he's missing." He smiles
I smile back and don't say a word
We make it up to the mountain and it's absolutely breath taking. Maybe my mama did me good after all.
We get off of our horses at the same time and Benjamin lays out a blanket along with a picnic basket.
"I always give my mama a rose when she comes with me but I'll give it to you." He smiles
"Thanks." I smile back while accepting the rose.
I take a seat and Benjamin sits next to me opening up the basket.
"Potato salad... sandwiches.. and pickles."
"I'll take a sandwich." I say.
He hands me over a sandwich and says," So no boyfriend huh?"
"Ha! We still on that subject." I say as I take a bite out of my turkey sandwich.
"Well just curious." He smirks
"Nope."
"Ya know Jessie. I missed you all these years."
"Really? You thought about me that long?" I ask while getting a bottle of water out of the picnic basket.
"Well yeah, how can I not. I was your Freddie Kruger and you were my Belle every Halloween."
"Haha what a good combo." I say jokingly.
"Also you're just hard to forget." He smiles.
I finish up my sandwich and stand up.
"Really?"
He stands up. "How can I not you're kind, smart, and beautiful also a very good farm girl."
I giggle
Benjamin moves my hair out of my face and we both look at each other with a wide eye gaze. We soon lock lips and kiss for the very first time. In a matter of in a second we pull away and smile.
"C'mon our folks are waiting for us."
We get back on the horses and head back to the farm. All the way I think about that kiss. It was special really special. Benjamin and I exchange smiles on the way back. We make it to the barn.
"I had a really great time." I smile
"Me too." He smiles back.
"Hey, my family and I were going to go caroling tonight. Wanna join?"
"Sure." I smile and nod.
I walk back in the house and meet my family in the living room.
I sit next to my mama. "How was it darling?"
"It wasn't.. too bad.. the view was beautiful and the sandwiches were to die for."
"Haha I'm glad honey."
Benjamin soon walks through the door and hangs his hat on the coat rack.
"Uhh mama?" He questions
"Yes dear."
"Can Jessie come caroling with us tonight?"
"Sure baby!"
Benjamin smiles at his mama and gives me a smile along with a wink.
Later that night we head out to the neighborhood and go door to door caroling. Benjamin and I are smiling at each other the whole time. I just feel very around him now. He's not some ten year old in a Freddie Kruger mask chasing me around with a plastic knife. He's now a Prince Charming chasing me around with his charm.
