My Only Sunshine

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.

I laughed as Nano tried to make a jetpack. I gently guided my apprentice, showing her all the necessary gears and circuits you need. Finally, Nano was up in the air, laughed and shouting "Look! I'm flying!" I laughed along with her.

You make me happy when skies are grey.

Nano sat next to me on our white couch. A pumpkin pie sitting on the table and hot chocolate in our hands, we sat and watched the rain come down. We made jokes and giggled, almost no worries in the world.

You'll never know, dear, how much I love you.

I put my arm around Nano, calming her. Purple light spilled from her eyes and she breathed hard. "Lalna, their voices-" she choked. I hugged her tightly. "I won't let them get you" I assured.

Please don't take my sunshine away.

I watched as the purple tendrils crawled across her remaining, untainted skin. Even from the bottom of the castle, I could see the dark purple mist that was engulfing her. Her eyes glowed bright purple. "Leave my domain, scientist!" boomed a voice that was not hers. She wasn't Nano anymore. I ran back to the house.

The other night, dear, as I was sleeping, I dreamt I held you in my arms.

I ran through a dark hallway, feeling my way along the dark halls. Suddenly there was a loud laugh from up ahead, but I pushed on. I saw Nano's familiar shape fall to the ground up ahead, bruised and bloody. I leaned down and held her, listening for a heartbeat where there wasn't one.

But when I woke, dear, I was mistaken.

My body jolted up. I tried to catch my breath. I was shaking and my whole body was sweaty from the dream. I look over at the other bed next to mine. It still remains empty, void of the soft breathing I had become so used to. Sighing loudly, I got up and continued the work on my machines. Who needed sleep, anyway?
