Cal
When we arrive at the hospital, I'm separated from the girl and told to wait in the relatives room. I don't know why I feel the need to stay, it's not like I know the girl or have anything to do with the accident. But she saved my life, I have to know if she'll be okay. I can't bring myself to think what would happen if she's not, the girl risked her life to save mine. It's then I realise that I don't even know her name. I owe the girl everything and I know nothing about her. After what seems like hours the door to the waiting room opens. I rush out of my seat expecting to see the doctor but instead the police enter the room. What are they doing here?
"Are you the one who travelled with the girl in the ambulance after she was knocked down?" one of the officers asks.
"Yes" I answer unsure of the relevance of the question.
"Good, we'd like to ask you a couple of questions regarding the accident."
"Okay, sure. I don't think I'd be much help though, I wasn't aware of the accident until I was pushed out of the way by the girl. Do you know how she's doing? Is she going to be okay? Can I see her?" The officers look confused by my sudden list of questions but they look back at me with sympathy in their eyes. That's when I get a sick feeling in my stomach. Why do they look apologetic?
"W-what's wrong?" I ask, panicked about the response I may get.
"She's currently unresponsive and has slipped into a coma. The doctor is unsure if she'll wake up. That's why it's vital that you tell us everything you know about the accident" it is the shorter of the two offices that replies, but I'm barely focusing on them as my mind is lost by the fact the girl is in a coma.
"What's her name?" I blurt out. The officers look at me with confusion until one of them finally understands and answers my question.
"We are yet to identify the girl as she had no form of ID on her and nobody has reported a girl fitting her description as missing". I nod in understanding but I feel torn inside as I have a strong need to know her name. I just want to know something about the mysterious girl who saved my life. Why would a stranger risk their life for me? Who is she?
My thoughts were interrupted by the persistent offices yet again.
"So can you tell us anything about the vehicle? What type of vehicle was it? Can you remember the colour? Did you see the driver?"
"It all happened so fast. I...I think I might have seen a flash of blue in the corner of my eye, so maybe the vehicle was blue but I can't say for certain what colour it was. And I definitely didn't see the driver. I wasn't facing the vehicle when it almost hit me. If it wasn't for the girl I wouldn't have even known anything was happening until it was too late. She really did save my life."
"Okay, well if you remember anything else give us a call" the officers say giving me one of their cards before they leave the room.
I'm once again left in silence but this time any hope I had previously had vanished. The girl is in a coma because of me. The officers said the doctors aren't convinced she'll regain consciousness. I feel racked with guilt. What can I do to make this right?
