I woke early the next morning, around eight or so, and immediately jumped from my bed. Okay, not literally but the concept is the same.
Adem had fallen half way off my bed. His arm was flung over my face, backwards, his chest was hanging off the side of my queen-size bed, and his face was towards me. He was completely unconscious.
“Adem, get up.” I whispered and nudged his arm. When he didn’t move I said it louder. I had to get louder about three times before I could actually get him up.
“ADEM!” I yelled in his ear. He freaked out and flailed his body before he fell face-first into the tan carpet on my floor.
“Holy freaking balls, dude!” I screamed, clutching my minion pillow I made a few months back. Okay, so I was a little rash for me being the one to scream but hey, he scared me.
But for the first time since I found out I had cancer, a realization hit me. What was I even doing? Letting Adem in that easily. Like, what the hell is my mother doing, letting him stay here?
I raced across the hall and burst into my brother’s room that Les was staying in, only to find her lying on her face, butt in the air, and drooling on one of Zach’s old Transformers pillowcases he’s had since he was like nine years old. I dragged my tank over to the side of the bed with me and whispered in her ear,
“GET UP LES! GET UP, GET UP, GET UP!”
Okay, so I didn’t whisper, I blew her eardrums out with my screaming. Whoops.
“What the frick, blondie?” she mumbled back, still half asleep. Les called me blondie whenever she was either hung over or tired. In this case, she’s probably both.
“Heading home.” I heard a voice say from behind me. “The two of you need anything?” Adem pointed to both of us, attempting to fix his tousled hair.
“No. Nope, not at all. We’re good, go on. Bye. Adios. See you later. Vamanos.” I rushed out and smiled sweetly, Lesley falling back to sleep back at the bed. Adem walked down the stairs and said goodbye to mom. Once I heard his retreating footsteps lessen and the sound of the front door slamming, Les shot up.
“Tell. Me. Everything.” she said.
“As in..?” I questioned as if I had no idea what she talking about.
“As in what’s between you and Adem.”
“There is nothing.” I said blatantly.
“Yes there is, I can see it.”
No there isn’t.”
“Yes huh.”
Nuh uh.”
“Yes huh.”
“No, Les. There really isn’t.”
“Whatever. Go get dressed, we’re going to see Garyn.”
“Wait, Les call the doctor. Like now.” I demanded.
“Why, are you okay?” she asked concernedly.
My lungs felt like they were collapsing into themselves. The pain was unbearable and I couldn’t breathe at all, even with the oxygen tank. Shit, I thought.
“Lori?” my mom said, rushing upstairs.
“My lungs fricking suck at being lungs, mother. Now help me downstairs please?” I said.
When Dr. Rork finally got to my house and examined me, his words stopped my own. What he said absolutely killed me.
“Lori, you are experiencing metastasis, which means your cancer is growing throughout your body, and by the looks of where your pain is, its starting to spread through your left arm, and will continue to grow.”
My mom was squeezing my right hand, crying hard, and so were Lesley and I.
I’m going to die. Literally.
