*Recap*
“Whatever. Go get dressed, we’re going to see Garyn.”
“Wait, Les call the doctor. Like now.” I demanded.
“Why, are you okay?” she asked concernedly.
My lungs felt like they were collapsing into themselves. The pain was unbearable and I couldn’t breathe at all, even with the oxygen tank. Shit, I thought.
“Lori?” my mom said, rushing upstairs.
“My lungs fricking suck at being lungs, mother. Now help me downstairs please?” I said.
When Dr. Rork finally got to my house and examined me, his words stopped my own. What he said absolutely killed me.
“Lori, you are experiencing metastasis, which means your cancer is growing throughout your body, and by the looks of where your pain is, its starting to spread through your left arm, and will continue to grow.”
My mom was squeezing my right hand, crying hard, and so were Lesley and I.
I’m going to die. Literally.
~~~
Calm down, Lori, I scolded myself. You’ll be fine.
Lesley brought me out of my thoughts when she snapped in my face.
“Babe, you good? I mean, I know you’re not, but you’re not going to faint or anything right?”
I nodded, but I honestly didn’t know. Anything could happen at this point, at least in my situation anyway.
“I-fine.”I breathed out as soon as Garyn walked through the door and grabbed my hand.
“I thought you were in the infirmary, Garyn. How’d you get ou-” I started, but he cut me off.
“I’m fine. I mean, I’ll have this cast,” he said, pulling up his broken arm from his side, “and a fractured rib. But like I said, I’ll be okay. Plus, I wanted to be able to be here for you, so I had them let me out.”
I honestly didn’t know what to say, so all I did was put the biggest grin on my face that I could.
But what do I do about Adem? I’ll just have to tell him everything, and hopefully he’ll understand.
“Ms. Bennett, I think you should go home. Meet me tomorrow, and we’ll do some more tests, and see what treatment you will need. Go rest.” Dr. Rork said to me, and then he whispered something to my mom, and she teared up a little, but also looked expectant of what he said. With that, we all walked out of the office, me holding Adem’s hand, but our fingers weren’t intertwined.It was more like a friendly gesture, which I happily took.
Everyone but Garyn came back to my house because he needed to be home with his parents and his little sister, Abbie.
