•Chapter 13

We park on the side of the road. Strip shops lined the side of the roads.

We all climb out of the truck. John Luke locks it and sticks the keys in his pocket.

"Yall can go to wherever yall want. We'll meet back here at 9. We have to be back by 10." Saddie instructs.

"We.. don't really have our phones to check the time.." I trail off, leaning onto one foot and squinting because of the setting sun.

"Here." John Luke takes off the black and green watch off his wrists and hands it to me. "I'll need that back." He chuckles.

I nod, chuckling quietly. "Cmon guys let's get all of the stuff we want to do in." I smirk lightly, turning on my heel with Grayson beside me. Chandler following behind.

It was beautiful here really. The buildings looked old and nice. People walked along the sidewalks. I stop to look around, a small smile on my face.

"This isn't the boardwalk." Grayson says.

"It's better really. These are strip shops." I explain.

"Oh! Chandler told me about those. It's where you go to see girls-"

"Grayson! No! Those are strip clubs." I say, then glare at Chandler who has a satisfied smirk plastered on his face.

"Oh."

"Strip shops are.. hm. You see how all these buildings are connected? - Well that's why it's called a strip. It's a big strip of shops." I explain.

Grayson nods. "Oh okay. Can we get ice cream?" He questions.

"You got money?" I look over at him, raising an my eyebrows.

He sighs and shakes his head no.

"That's okay. I do." I laugh quietly.

He does the same.

"Yall see anywhere yall wanna go in?" I ask the two of them.

"The Ice Cream shop."

"That-" Chandler points to a building with the words 'Surf Shop' written across it.

"Chandler there aren't even big waves here." I laugh quietly.

He shrugs.

"I'm not buying anything." I mumble as we walk towards it.

-

We were sitting at a table with a couple bags to each of ourselves with t-shirts in them. I got one that said 'Carolina Cowgirl' and Chandler and Grayson got one that said 'Carolina Cowboy'. Though, I told them many of times neither of them have the potential to be southerners.

I suddenly remember what time were sposed to be back and check the watch John Luke gave me.

8:32.

"Oh my God! Guys c'mon." I panic, starting off in a direction.

"What? What?!" Chandler stops us.

"It's 9:14!" I exclaim loudly.

His eyes widen and we're suddenly on our way again.

"You don't even know which way you're going!" I hear Grayson shout.

I sigh loudly. "If only we had our phones." I mumble.

"Is there a pay phone somewhere?" Chandler asks.

Graysons holds a look of confusion. "I thought those were myths..?"

I'm too worried to laugh, but if I could, I'd be rolling on the ground in laughter.

I look around frantically. "There!"

I point to a beat up pay phone hanging on the wall of a smoothie store.

I pick it up and stick a dollar In it, starting to type my Mama's number.

"Wait! We're not sposed to be out here." Chandler stops me. He has the same wide eyes and worried expression as me.

I don't realize I finished the number when it starts ringing. "Awh fuck fuck fuck fuck." I quickly hang the phone up.

"So who do we call?" Grayson asks.

"Uhm... uhm.. a taxi?" Chandler suggests.

"We don't know our address, smart one." I scoff at him.

He sighs and I feel a pang of guilt.

Whoops..

"Sorry. I'm scared to hell and back." I murmur.

He nods in understandment and quickly becomes paniced again.

"If we call a taxi when can just give him the directions on the way there. I think I remember them." I ponder on my thoughts, rethinking it.

"We can try.." Chandler trails off.

I read the lable on the the pay phone and quickly dial the number for a taxi.

Soon we have someone on the way.

I check the time again.

9:46.

I sigh deeply.

-

The taxi pulls up to our beach house. I guess I did know the way back.

I climb out quickly, handing the guy the money.

"Thanks sir." I say. The three of us hurriedly go into the house, the man pulling away.

I open the door and go in.

"What - what time is it?" Chandler huffs, relieved that we made it back.

I lift the watch up to my face, "10:07." I breathe.

After were all calmed down, it's almost 12am.

I hear a car pull into the drive way, and I sit back like nothing happened.

"Shailee! The bags!" Grayson points to the three bags with our shirts in it.

The voices of our parents grow closer as I stand up. "O - Okay. I'm gonna take these upstairs and I'll act like I was using the bathroom." I say.

I grab the bags and jog up the stairs just as the door opens.

I go into our bedroom and stuff the bags Into one of our dressers.

There. That's good.

I flush the toilet the make my lie more believable and go back downstairs.

"Did you have fun?" Mrs. Gina asks us three.

I shrug. "I did. We went swimming and ate some chips." I lie.

"Mhm.. why isn't your hair wet then?" Nic questions.

I raise an eyebrow at him. "We got out at like 6. My hair should be dry by now." I smirk.

A few questions are shot towards the boys, then Mama looks at me. "Shailee.. Where'd you get that watch?" She questions.

Dammit I forgot the watch! How am I gonna get it back to John Luke..?

I look down at my wrist. "Oh - this is.. Chandlers. He - he gave it to me so I could tell time." I stutter. I glance over at Chandler nervously and he gives me the same one back.

Thankfully, no more questions are asked so we can all go to bed in peace.

TADA!
