Newt entered the jewelry store, cursing himself for letting the Niffler get the best of him yet again. The winter holidays were fast approaching, so many Muggles were in buying gifts, or just seeking refuge from the snowy weather outside. Newt hoped he could find the Niffler before any unsuspecting Muggle happened upon him.

"Excuse me, sir. Is there anything I can help you with?"

Newt looked past the man before him, his eyes sweeping the room. "No, I'm fine thanks,"

"You seem to be looking for something."

Just as he'd said it, Newt spotted the Niffler jumping into a bag. A young woman, about Newt's age, picked it up without noticing the creature that hopped in her pack.

"And I've just found it, thank you," Newt said again.

He rushed past the man and stopped just before running into the woman he was trying to catch. She smiled at his haste, lowered her head ever so slightly and said, "Sorry,"

"Excuse me," Without much thought, Newt latched onto her arm, watching the bag in her hands swing wildly as she came to an abrupt stop. He only hoped the Niffler was alright being thrown around like that.

The woman turned to Newt, eyeing him curiously. "Is something wrong?" She questioned, looking Newt up and down. He assumed she was trying to get the measure of him.

"Um," Newt had to think quickly. He wasn't sure how much time he had before the Niffler would move on to somewhere else and Newt would have to hunt him down again. "I'm Newt. Uh, Scamander." He held out his hand for the woman to shake.

With a confused frown, she took his hand. "(Y/N) (L/N). Is there something I can help you with, Mr. Scamander?"

"Yes, actually," He met her eyes, which were a captivating (e/c), but quickly looked away. Not only was she extremely pretty, which made the young man nervous, but Newt hadn't ever been good with maintaining eye contact. "That... item you purchased, a-a friend of mine was meant to have it and I—"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Scamander, but I can't give it to you." She turned away from him and started off.

Newt chased after her, wasting no time. "How much did you pay for it?"

"That's none of your concern, I'm sure."

"Actually, I-I was hoping I could, uh, reimburse you."

"This is for my mother. She's had her eye on this necklace for months. I'm sure your friend will understand." (Y/N) pushed the doors opened and stepped outside.

When Newt followed her, he felt the cold winter air pricking through his clothes. While he was inside, it'd started snowing again, coating the fall that was already on the ground.

"Miss (L/N)," Newt tried to think of something to say. He didn't want to lie to her, but telling her the truth would only get both of them into trouble. He'd have to obliviate her once she learned about the wizarding world. Newt didn't want to put her through that, especially when she'd done nothing wrong. "I need that necklace."

"And so do I," Newt could tell she was growing impatient by the way she spoke. "I'm sorry you couldn't get ahold of it, Mr. Scamander, but I've been saving up for months so I could get this for my mother. You had plenty of time. Now, if you would please leave me alone—"

Newt caught sight of the Niffler poking his head out of (Y/N)'s bag, holding the shining necklace in his tiny hands. He was just about to hop out of the bag and take off and Newt couldn't have that, so he reached toward him without a single thought.

(Y/N), who thought Newt was trying to steal from her, pulled away. She sent him a nasty stare and prepared to yell at him as the Niffler fell backwards into the bag, his great escape thwarted.
