YOUR POV

I stood there. Mouth gaping, eyes wide with pure shock. Finally the screws and cogs in my brain start working in coalition as I stepped toward the boy knelt at my feet and clasp my hands around his own - presenting the beautiful ring to me.

The transparent diamond mounted in the golden claw twinkled in the sunlight, beckoning me, daring me to say yes, but I winced, my brow furrowing and my forehead becoming the victim of pain

My teeth found the edge of my lip as I chewed it, deep in thought "Y/N?" Eli tried again this time sounding a little less hopeful, I couldn't speak, why couldn't I speak?

I could feel the tears building up.

no.

no no no, I'm not crying, not over this.

my eyelids fluttered vigorously, blinking away any tears that threatened to fall and I cast my gaze up to the sky. I removed my hands from Eli's as I felt him stand up to my height

"I'm sorry Eli" I finally croaked shaking my head as I tried desperately to control my overwhelming emotions

"I'm so so sorry" I sighed deeply as I heard the boy let out a shaky breath too, "I love you Y/N" his words were even shakier than when he was asking me to devote my life to him

"I love you too El-" "no, you don't" he cut me off making my eyes dart back to my boyfriend, he was crying, he did a bloody good job at hiding it but I could tell he was crying.

"Y/N, if you loved me you would've said yes, if you loved me as much as you...love Finn"

My mouth opened and closed but no words came, and with that Eli returned the velvet box to his pocket and smiled, that must've been the saddest smile I'd ever seen, believe it or not - it really did break my heart

"Babe I know I can be an asshole sometimes but I know now that I'm too late" he looked at his toes as I cocked my head at the boy, slightly confused by his words

"Finn was your first love and will always be and that's why I need to let you go because as much as I love you I know you'll never feel the same in return" I couldn't hold back the tears this time, they streamed down my cheeks as I cupped Eli's face in my hands

"you need to go back to New York and tell him before it's too late for you to" he was still smiling - sad as ever "Eli...I love you so much" I squeaked "I know" he replied, and with that I leant forward and placed a soft kiss on his pink lips

"two days ago you were literally dragging me out of that country and now I want me to go back?" I giggled causing him to laugh "I guess I needed time to accept that I wasn't meant for you" He pulled back from my grasp and turned to start walking toward the car waiting on the street where we left it 10 minutes ago

"you coming?" he called and I nodded running to catch up to the blonde, "Y/N I'm glad you fell in love with someone who understands everything you don't say" he said gently, not looking at me

I didn't reply, just slung my arm over his shoulder and smiled as the leaves crunched under our feet.

------

"he asked me to marry me" I giggled to myself in the silent room as my father sat in front of me staring at the wall over my shoulder "and you can't see the ring on my finger so you probably already guessed I said no..."

still no reaction

"oh my god dad what will it take for you to say something!" I whisper-shouted sitting forward on the uncomfortable wooden chair grabbing his hands in mine and resting my chin on them "he really is a good guy...Eli, I kinda got the feeling you never liked him but he basically told me to go and date Finn!"

That's when I realised eli was right, as much as i hate to say it he was right about my dad, he had died when my mother did not physically just on the inside...where it really counted, he stopped loving everyone, stopped loving me

"anyway not that you probably care, and I don't even know if you're listening but I booked tickets back to New York tomorrow, and I honestly don't know how long I'm going to be there, if you only spoke to me we could move you to another facility up there...I could visit you like I do here, all you need to do is tell me you want to go"

I waited for an answer not expecting him to say anything

"okay" I sighed dropping his hands so they landed limply on his lap "I love you dad, I guess I'll see you later" I stood up, grabbing my bag in the process and taking one last look at the well kept man whose eyes were constantly empty before exiting the room to find Eli waiting for me

"ready to go?" he smiled and I nodded, sighing one last time before following him to to doors.

(EW what's this cliche shit that I'm about to "publish")
