A few months before December, the spirit of Christmas can be felt. What a long Christmas season the country has. As the month of December got nearer, the excitement of the whole country grew. The three classes of society looked forward to it every single year.
But with the joy they felt, it came with pain. A group of rebels started a fight. Their hatred and frustration of being treated without dignity pushed them to the brim. The gobernadorcillo of Cielo Brillante turned a blind eye to the anomalies happening everywhere. His ears were only for those he chose to acknowledge.
The rebels called themselves the 'Personas Iguales' which translates to 'equal people'. They were composed of a group of individuals from different classes of society, mainly the lower class.
One of the houses of the gobernadorcillo was burned, sparking an uproar. It was near December when in happened. The spirit of Christmas seemed to have taken a downfall. Instead of a feeling joy and excitement, it was mixed with fear and anger.
The teniente of the town, Jose David Buenaventura is a close friend of Lucián's father. People would refer to him as an angel or a saint due to his compassionate attitude towards the poor. Although he was as wealthy as the gobernadorcillo, he remained humble. But during this chaos, he remained silent.
A silence that made people question his true intention. He was regarded as an angel sent from heaven. A leader who listens and takes action but that in this case.
The streets of Cielo Brillante was decorated by colorful decorations. Parols were hanged everywhere. Those star shaped lanterns called parols gave slight hope to those who cower in fear. Just like the stars in the night sky that illuminated the dark.
Guardia civiles were patrolling the streets. As they walked pass every single parols, they couldn't help but feel hopeful of having a safe and joyful Christmas. They were wishing that chaos wouldn't ruin it. It is a time for joy after all.
One of them stopped in his tracks upon spotting an old man walking towards an alley. He silently approached the man with an intimidating look. The old man looked suspicious because nobody was brave enough to wander around the streets without any protection.
The whole town was still frightened of what the Personas Iguales will do. "Buenas noches, señor!" The old man froze upon hearing his greeting. The guardia civil narrowed his eyes at him and glanced at what the man was carrying. He was carrying a bag that was filled to the brim.
