Out I jump
The bedroom I flee
Rushing to the hall
To see what old saint Nick
Brought me
Is it the new teddy bear
Or a new pair of silver shoes
Perhaps it's the new earrings I've been wanting
Or the new books I've been needing
Maybe it's something totally new
Like a puppy and a little fluffy bunny
Rushing down the stairs
Going as quite as a mouse
Not to awake the big devil in the house
My excitement comes in wave
Seeing that the devil isn't there
"Hooray!!!" I shout
Finally it will be the first time in years
But of course my luck runs out
And before I can blink
I fall down with a thud
"Sorry little sis!!!" He shouts
Zooming past me
And I watch in utter defeat
As he touches the Christmas tree
Winning the bet between him and me
Walking back purposely slow
With a grin that makes me think
He's the grinch
He extends his hand
Which I grab
And then he ruffles my hair
"Better luck next year" he says
Even though I lost
I can't help but smile
His grin is contagious
As it always is
Giving him a light shove
I rush back up stairs
Where another adventure awaits
Waking up the parents
Yet even with my advantage
He still passes me
Laughter escaping
The both of us
"Oh well" I thought
"Better luck next year"
