Born October 23, 2513, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the boy named Kane Kamapua'a Ōpūnui Nathaniel grew up in a relatively nice household with a loving family and caring friends. Like any other child, he grew up with the blissful ignorance of how horrible the world around him was. There were his fair shares of breakthroughs to the horrors of the world with the news on the television, radio, and internet, but he would simply push them out of his mind. When the Human-Covenant War started on February 11, 2525, Kane had only just turned 11 four months prior and now with a younger brother who was 5, had heard about the destruction of the planet of Harvest just a couple of days after the attack had transpired.

Filled with a strong sense of pride for the human race, he swore to himself, his family, and his friends that he would fight off anyone or anything that would potentially bring harm to them, and that he would always be there for them no matter what; however, this train of thought is a double-edged sword which can be used to destroy your enemies and yourself. With that, he set out on a path that many would regret without a second thought.

     With there being 11 military bases in Hawai'i, ONI's presence was at an all time large with the beginning of the Spartan-III Project. ONI Operatives were scouting for any orphaned children, but ended up with nothing. However, they did find an overly enthusiastic teenager talking about how he was going to single handedly take down the Covenant Empire. Even if his age was going to be a small problem, they thought that this was an opportunity too good to pass up. With this, they conscripted Ikaika, kidnapped him, into the Project.

  The SPARTAN-IIIs were designed to be cheaper and expendable. They would be trained in companies of 300 to 330 at a time, with a training regime tougher than that of the previous Spartan Program. They were sent on suicide missions that the UNSC could not accomplish with a conventional invasion force, elite ODSTs, or even Spartan-IIs. Though the casualty rates of the SPARTAN-IIIs stood at 100 percent on some missions, to ONI, all the operations were strategic successes. They were trading lives for time against the larger and technologically superior Covenant Empire. ONI hoped that in time, enough Spartans would survive to train more and more future Spartans, swelling the ranks of available super soldiers from only thirty Spartan-IIs in 2531to a hundred thousand SPARTAN-IIIs within ten to twenty years.

On December 27, 2531, the first group of Spartan-IIIs, known as Alpha Company, were sent to Onyx  to be trained at Camp Currahee. They were led by Kurt-051, a SPARTAN-II operating under the pseudonym "Ambrose." Of the 497 candidates who were conscripted, only 300 became Spartans. This class of Spartans all survived the augmentations and was activated in November of 2536. Their record was at first exemplary, as they saw action at the Insurrection of Mamore, the Battle of New Constantinople, and at the Bonanza Asteroid Belt. Nine months after they were activated, they were massacred in Operation: PROMETHEUS. All of the three-hundred Spartans deployed on the mission were supposedly killed. The only fire team mentioned for Alpha Company is Team Wolf Pack. Kane-A467 was on a separate mission with an unknown Marine, both of which were caught in a Warthog explosion, resulting in shrapnel penetrating the SPI Armors visor and permanently damaging his eye as well as having shrapnel protruding from the right side of his skull. The unknown Marine was killed in the explosion due to a large piece of shrapnel embedding itself entirely in her brain.

An unknown number of Alpha Company's members, deemed to match the criteria used in selecting the SPARTAN-II candidates, were hand-picked by Mendez and Kurt before Operation: PROMETHEUS and extracted from the company. These Spartans were assigned to other units, and given equipment on par with the Spartan-IIs, including the Mjolnir Armor, to make them equally efficient on the battlefield. By 2552, four of these Spartans served with Noble Team; Carter-A259, Jun-A266, Emile-A239, and Thom-A293. Kane-A467 on the other hand was put into a program by the name of Project Freelancer , resulting in his designation being changed to Agent Hawaii. The Programs purpose was to test how Super Soldiers with Artificial Intelligence functioned in combat scenarios, all the while fighting against a rogue division of the UNSC and the Covenant Empire. Hawaii did not have the 'pleasure' of receiving one of these A.I., but he would soon learn to be thankful of that decision.
