Unforgivable Mistake

Chapter 5

Iris's Pov:

I decided to go to the cafe to get some iced coffee and sit there and relax for a bit. On the way there I passed the park and a few houses. As I was walking past the park, I could hear the sound of cheerful children playing in the playground. I smelt the smell of freshly cut grass and saw people walking along the path through the park while chatting away to their friend. It was a nice place to go and have a picnic on a warm summer day. While I was walking past one of the houses I heard shouting. I looked at the house thinking of I should go see if everything's alright but then it stopped so I decided to just carry on walking to the cafe.

At the cafe

"Hey Iris",Vernon said when he saw me walk up to the till,"I'm guessing you want the usual iced coffee?"

"Yes please",I replied.

Vernon was a worker at the cafe and since I was a regular customer he always knew what I wanted. He was also a good person to go to if you needed any advice. While I waited for my coffee I could see the house where the shouting came from. A person came out the house and went to the park. I wonder if they're okay I planned to check after I finished my coffee.

After I finished my coffee the person was still in the park sitting on a bench. They looked like they were around my age so I walked towards them.
"Excuse me. I heard shouting from your house and I was just wondering if you're okay."

The person turned to look at me and my eyes widened once I realised who it was. Daniel.

Daniel's Pov:

I turned around to reply to the person that I was fine but I couldn't find the words when I saw it was Iris. The same girl who shouted in my face was being kind to me. I cleared my throat,"I'm fine", I told her.

"Are you sure? You don't look fine"

I didn't know what was wrong with me. I couldn't speak. I just looked down at the floor.
"Do you want to talk about it?" She asked. I simply shook my head.

"Ok um how about we walk around the park for a while to refresh your mind and if you want to talk about it you can." She suggested. I nodded my head and we started to walk around the park. After a while we were back where we started.
"I need to go back home now",I said when we were near my house.

"Yeah me too", she said.

"Um I'll see you tomorrow at school", I said not really knowing what to say.

"Ok I'll see you at school"

When she started to walk away I suddenly remembered something.
"Iris", she turned to look at me,"Do you mind keeping this between us? I mean not telling anyone about the shouting or anything?" I asked.

"Sure", she turned and carried on walking home.

After that I walked into my house,went up to my room,put my earphones in and turned on my music. Completely blocking myself out from the real world.

Iris's Pov:

While I was walking home I couldn't forget the look on Daniel's face when I saw him. He looked broken and fed up but when I asked him about what happened he looked scared and on edge. I wonder why he wants to keep it a secret. Surely it can't be that bad. Can it?

When I reached home I was just in time to see my family setting up for dinner.
"Hi sweetie. How was the first day back?",my mum asked after we sat down at the table.

"It was good."

My mum was the most hard-working person in the family. She had a nice personality and there was something about her that made her seem like a calm,welcoming person. Even when she's tired and just wants to stay in bed all day she still makes an effort to please the family and always has a smile on her face.

After our family meal we all watched a movie together and soon it was time for me and my brother to go to bed. As I was lying in bed I still wondered about what happened at Daniel's house. Maybe I'll find out tomorrow I thought to myself and soon I drifted off into a blissful sleep and all my worries were forgotten.
