"C'mon Gavin! Keep your head in the game!" my friend Davis yelled as I missed yet another shot.
"Sorry, Davis! Just got a lot on my mind." I yelled back.
That was partially true. But to be completely honest, I was just thinking about Annabeth Chase.
I mean, the girl was gorgeous. Not only was she pretty and perfect in every way, she was also incredibly intelligent. I never thought she'd even notice me, I mean, she was kinda out of my league. What am I talking about? She's way out of my league.
But when our teacher, Mr. Keltin, paired us together for a Science project, I was absolutely thrilled. I couldn't stop thinking about it. I've had dreams about this day ever since I met her. And now it was a reality.

"Gavin?" a sickly sweet voice asked.
"Hmm?" I turned to Annabeth smiling.
"You there?"
I grinned. "On Earth for certain."
She smiled. "You sound like Percy."
"Who?"
"You've never met him?"
I shook my head. "Why don't you come over to my house later. That way, we can get a head start on the project and you can meet Percy. How does that sound?"
I smiled. "That sounds great."

At the end of class, Annabeth wrote down her address on a note card in her beautiful cursive. My dad drove me, since I didn't have a car and he expected me to Uber home.
"Be home by dinner time, Gavin." he said.
"I will."
Then he drove off.
Shouldering my backpack, I walked up to Annabeth's house, sure I was mistaken. I mean, it was a mansion. Not a house, or an apartment, or even her father's house maybe, it was a mansion.
Amazing what a little brains can do to you.
I walked up to the front door and rang it, only to find a punk girl open it. "Whatdya want, stupid?"
"Ex-excuse me?" I sputtered.
"Thalia!"
Annabeth came into view, pushing the girl aside. "Sorry, that's Thalia. She and some of her umm...friends are staying here temporarily."
"That-that's okay!"
She smiled. "Thanks for being so understanding. I know this is kind of an unusual situation."
"It's okay. I come from a big family. There's always people around."
Annabeth's face lit up. "That's amazing! In a way, I do too!"
I smiled at her. Then I looked down at my bag. "Oh!" she said. "Come in!"
I went inside and gasped. The house was beautiful. "Wow." I muttered.
Annabeth smiled. "You like it?"
I nodded. "It's...it's so..."
"Annabeth?" a deep voice finished.
"Yes!" I said.
A man emerged from the hallway to wrap an arm around Annabeth, who grinned. "Hi, I'm-"
"Percy!" A girl screeched.
He sighed and whispered something to Annabeth, who smiled and muttered "a week" in response.
The guy stalked off. "That's Percy Jackson." I said.
Annabeth smiled. "The one and only."
"But-but he's so famous! Are you guys like famous friends or something?"
She laughed. "I'm not that famous. But that's beside the point. Come on, we have work to do."

About thirty minutes after I came in I came upon a rather startling realization.
"Oh my God! You guys are dating!"
Annabeth looked at me, eyes narrowed. "And...?"
"Nothing! I just..."
She smiled. "I get that a lot."
"There's nothing wrong with it-"
She cut me off with a simple gesture of her hand. "It's already forgotten."
I smiled gratefully. "Thanks."
"No problem."

As I got to know Annabeth better, I decided that she ultimately wasn't my type. A certain incident on Monday confirmed that:
I was sitting on a bench with Annabeth, discussing plans when Percy walked by.
"Annabeth?"
"Hmm?"
"Isn't that Percy?"
She looked up. "Oh, yeah."
"Aren't you...?"
She wrinkled her nose. "He just wants attention. I've been busy recently and couldn't really...you know."
I nodded. "Go talk to him."
She looked up at me in surprise. "What?"
I shrugged. "He kinda reminds of one of my friends. And he's very social and would just need confirmation."
"Of what?"
"That you still love him."
Annabeth looked up, wide-eyed. "Oh Gods, Gavin you're right!"
She got up in a hurry and ran to Percy. I watched as she talked to him and he kissed her. I sighed.
I heard a thump as someone sat next to me. "I like what you did for them."
I looked over. It was Annette Hevells. She was a cheerleader for my basketball team. "Thanks Annette."
"You had a crush on her."
I flushed, looking down. "How did you know?" I asked quietly.
"Because that's how I look at the person I like."
I looked up at her. "Who's that?"
She leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss to my lips. "You."
That's how I met Percabeth (and my girlfriend).
